I think what PHs are really after is a coupe weighing in about 11-1200KGs, 200 odd HP, rear wheel drive, good seating position and control weights with sensible power train and running costs.
If a company made one of those, they couldn't sell enough of them and we'd all change our A3 TDIs for one of them ;-)
You forgot to mention that it needs the softest soft touch plastics known to man, low enough CO2 to put it in the £30 tax bracket and it can't cost more than a mid-range Ford Focus did 15 years ago to actually tempt a single Audi driver out of his TDi and away from the 4 ringed badge...

I can't be the only that thinks that this looks like a Grand Theft Auto modification gone wrong though right...?

Where do people get this st?

100k GT86s/BRZs were sold by this time a year ago, about 2 years after launch.

The MX-5, the world's best selling sports car(TM) sold 900k in 21 years, or <43k per year on average, so the Toyobaru has been selling at a greater average rate. It's expecting the millionth to be sold sometime soon, making a yearly average of about 38.5k per year.

Tell me again, what is so poor about the GT86/BRZ sales performance?

They really do struggle with them in the UK sadly, quite a few dealers don't even run them as demos now as the number of sales doesn't justify the costs in running one. They do sell very quickly when used at the £17/18K mark though.

I know the UK (and European) sales are poor, but that means precisely naff all to a Japanese manufacturer making global decisions.

Maybe Toyota should stop making the Camry, because UK sales are so bad as to be non-existent. Oh, wait...

It's interesting though, the Manta sold more in its last year of production in UK (and it was pretty long in the tooth by then ) than the GT86 in its best year of sales in the UK.

Both had to compete with more powerful competitors and much faster hot hatches

Maybe people have fallen out of love with coupes

I think there is something in this point. Coupes require a degree of "commitment". Big doors, low seating position, usually longer overhangs etc.
I'm a massive advocate of the GT86/BRZ but for a daily "do all" car, these things can become an issue.
I commute in an Integra DC2 which, for the roads on my commute, is an absolute joy. On weekends, when I cart the kids around and need to "get stuff done" i.e. visiting shops, car parks, on-road parking etc. I prefer our little Yaris T Sport, sprightly enough in traffic, higher seating position, nice little doors, very little in the way of overhangs, no real "commitment" required.

& the UK used car market is just too damn tempting!

In Oz and the USA, used Porsche aren't anywhere near the BRZ/GT86 price range, Neither are M3's or anything else quick and sporting, hence it being a great seller.

Over here there is so much more bang for buck, that you have to want new, and you have to be happy about being pissed on by a 10 year old Tdi...

Chuck 20k into a PH search, drop the 0-60 time to 5 seconds and marvel at the choice, even 15k gives you alot!

Love the looks of this and yes, I love the Alfa SZ too hehe It's a shame that Nissan couldn't/wouldn't see this through, with all the good they're doing in performance cars and motorsport at the moment.

Nissan can't build enough Jukes..

bks, the MX-5 is less powerful. It isn't just one thing.

IMO a bit more punch and practicality would have seen far better sales. Look at the RX-8, despite the rotary engine and a massive thirst for fuel it sold like hot cakes. Outsold the BRZ/GT85,S2000 and 350Z put together!

You could fit 4 people in the RX-8. You can only fit 4 people in a BRZ/GT86 if you chop the legs off two of them.

Unqualified speculation based purely on personal observations.

I rarely see a GT86 on the road and have never seen a BRZ at all.

There was so much hype around it being something 'enthusiasts' were crying out for but seems they overestimated the number of car enthusiasts around these days (in the U.K at least). Blokes seems to prefer spending their money on carbon road bikes and Lycra these days...
