The limited edition one was the Raider, which I think was a 1.7 instead of a 1.4 ?

no no, the Raider was a 1.4 turbo, same as the standard. in fact, only differences were the special colour, blue, with colour coded wheels (again in blue) and a "RAIDER" strip across the rear window.

oh and lovely blue mats and piping. we all love blue mats

You're thinking of the GTX but that didn't have the GT Turbo suspension and was just a big-engined 5 (given it's flyweight construction). I seem to recall they also did a "Monaco" with leather seats which was a limited edition and probably had the 1.7 as well.

ahh fond memories. I had an H plater mint one. Had the turbo tweaked at BBR turbos (THE renault 5 specialist at the time) so she was shoving 175 horses out the 1.4 engine. Never used first gear once it was modified lol

Just one thing to watch out for . Torque steer. Even in an unmodified 115BHP one the torque steer is very very dangerous. Mine had the geometry adjusted and different shocks fitted to the front by BBR which totally erased all the torque steer. Then it was a fine car to drive :-)

That's right. They also did a 25 Monaco in the same colour. I think the Monaco badge was designed to compete with the Ford Ghia badge but never quite succeeded. I would have killed for a 5 GT Raider (mine was a Series 1 silver car) but absolutely hated the sperm-coloured white pearl thing which I thought was grotesque and always looked dirty even when clean. I quite liked the retina-searing Series 2 bright white one though. On the torque steer issue, mine pulled like a nympho at a Chippendales do but simple tracking eliminated it almost entirely. Now if you want torque steer, try one of those insidious Astra GTE's - worst and most scrabbly car I ever owned.

One thing I am certain of though is that the 5GT Turbo was a classic design and any chavvy bodykit or daft grille totally ruins the purity of the design. I sprayed my Series 1 grille in silver and sprayed the turbo-vane wheels graphite. I'll have to scan a pic sometime.

Some guff or other....

Some very interesting stuff.....

i actually only had a GTX myself, however, the old man had the Raider which, if i was very good and ate all my vegetables, i was allowed to molest, er, drive in a spirited manner, occasionally. and my god did you notice the torque steer! Dad had had it mildly fettled by BBR I think it was. upping the boost slightly giving something like 155 horse. which in a car the size of a roller skate was hugely entertaining to say the least.

that said the old GTX was good fun. Quite pokey but not in the same way the GTT was.

oh and the pulled like a nympho at a Chippendales do… rofl we like that
