RE: Audi S6: Review

There isn't necessarily a 'true' Quattro system, it's a marketing name that Audi use for their 4WD cars; the exact mechanical (and electronic, where applicable) components and details vary with different models/generations.
AFAIK, it's only Haldex if it's a transverse engine layout (not sure about the mid engined R8)wrightkarl said:
If you want driving fun then get something that's got class, style, heritage, history and performance as well. Pull up at a decent hotel in this and most people think "tosser" as at some point during their day an Audi will have been glued 3 inches from their rear bumper !
Oh and please don't run out the tired "Quattro" as being any of the above qualities, that was over 20 years ago
Have Audi done anything truly original or decent since then ??
Pull up at a smart hotel in a Phantom or a Ferrari and lots of people would think 'tosser' as well. Same in a Merc or BMW for that matter.Oh and please don't run out the tired "Quattro" as being any of the above qualities, that was over 20 years ago

This seems to be a car for people who want a well built, fast, comfortable family car that can also be used everyday in all weathers without being too shouty about it.
Based on those criteria it seems to be pretty good to me.
I think Audi's whilst perhaps not scintillating on a brief road test show the true depths of their abilities and "livability" over time. Traits that are initially deemed dull and boring actually become valuable day to day traits that soon get tiresome with the equivalents from other Marques.
Most long term fast Audi tests generally end in a glowing report, Chris Harris being a good example.

you should not see any rust on any 10 year old car with the way modern cars have been painted since around 2000, the one that rust have usually had accident damage and not been repaired proparly
I'm struggling to think of any 10 year old Audis I've seen with rusty, er, fenders.
Can't say I see too many 10 year old Audi's around full stop if I'm honest. Certainly not compared to the number of E46's you still see purring around - although I have seen a few of them with rusty arches....I'm struggling to think of any 10 year old Audis I've seen with rusty, er, fenders.

It's quattro but good point. Just take a look at a B7 RS4 or even the RS6 before last.Oh and please don't run out the tired "Quattro" as being any of the above qualities, that was over 20 years ago

I think the best part of this is that it will probably be rarer than the RS, plus you could afford a few more options. If I didn't have a new S3, this might be a consideration, in Avant form, naturally.

So you can't pull up in an Audi, Royce, Ferrari, Mercedes or BMW without beeing thought of as a tosser.
Can you tell me what I could pull up in please without being thought of in a derogatory manner?

Audis really aren't liked on Piston heads are they! Probably because they don't make any RWD vehicles meaning they don't appeal to the drift brigade or the BMW loving yoof. But this car would be great to own. Audi's may not be quickest on a track day, but as we come into winter, on a dark wet unknown road, I'd rather be in this S6 than an M badge BM or Nissan GTR! As for tailgating Audi drivers they are no worse IMO than C class Merc drivers who for me are the very worse out there right now.

I'd have it as an estate, in black. 450bhp in a car that could be mistaken for a 2.0TDi.
I think therein lies the problem for me. £60K worth of car that could pass as 2.0 TDI, no thanks. The people who would mistake it for a 2.0 TDi wouldn't even be looking but everyone else would hear the noise, see the grille and the little red badge and know it wasn't a TDi.
Fed up of people throwing this tired and incorrect statement out there, it's just lazy.

Any point in the RS6 once this has been remapped?
Remap the RS6 for 750bhp+I've poked around under the bonnet of my S4 and there's not turbo there

turbocharged vs n/a, what kind of comparison is that? you have no idea
3.0 V6 (SUPERcharged btw) versus a 4.2 V8 with a much higher redline...I would say an interesting comparison, actually. The usable torque of the S4 is already pretty handy.Yes, I have had a bunchy of S Audis, so I am bound to be biased, point is they have a place.
All weather performance in a discrete package. My wife's old S6 V10 estate is 8 years old and about 2 things have gone wrong, neither expensive. It's discrete enough to park in some of the distinctly iffy places both of us park for our work, whilst being swift and capacious enough to despatch journeys in all weathers with minimum effort, often with a bootful, roofbox, 2 kids etc. The V10 also sounds pretty characterful. No one calls us flash and yet most people who have an interest in cars think it's pretty cool for an old bus and we don't get the "TDI tailgater stigma" often mentioned. As an aside, I think no particular brand is any better or worse on that - may be that there are a lot of Audis on the road now (many of them white, not my choice I have to say) so it's more noticeable ? Personally I find Golf TDIs can be just as prominent - again there are lots of them around..
Over time I have looked at the likes of M5's, Jag XJRs etc, but as soon as the roads get slippery, pulling out of junctions and so forth becomes riskier and more at the whim of traction control - ditto overtaking on mud and leaf strewn country roads near where I live.
To (roughly) quote Clooney in Oceans 11 "If this isn't your brand of java, please be on your way".
For those of us who just need a car to tick all of the above (that isn't an SUV) then they just do the job...

Admittedly people who know what to look for wouldn't be fooled - the noise, the badge, the quad exhausts all give it away as an S6. However, to the casual observer it's pretty hard to tell it apart from a 2.0TDi S-Line.
True enough, most people will just think "another aggressive Audi, groan..." but Audis are just one of many cars I can think of that are a pain in the arse in my daily drive, Golf TDIs being up there with C220 CDIs, BMW 120ds, basically any 2 litre diesel VAG or BMW/Merc type car!!But I do have a soft spot for these sporty Audis, in UK conditions they make a lot of sense....

It does suprise me how many people on here seem to really care what other people think about what they drive.
There is a large "Wouldn't buy one of those because of the image as I'm not image conscious" cabal on PH.Not that they're image conscious in anyway you understand...
But all bets are off once they drop below 10k and then what was once utter bling driven by aholes magically turns into a tasteful V8 PH legend.

The parallel being, I would never buy a car because of some perceived status-enhancing effect, but I might (just might, not definitely) avoid one if it made people think I was a tt.
I don't need a car to make people think that.

You have instantly relinquished the right to be taken seriously on this forum ever again.
Rubbishing the R8 doesn't help your cause either - especially if your dream car is a CL500...
