This 100%, once paid I will show it but never before.
You expect someone to pay you without checking/seeing the V5?
I think this is actually logical.

Only an idiot would buy a car without seeing the V5 (you need it for things like HPI checks). So Acuity has ensured that he only ever sells cars to idiots.

That makes sense for him.

They can see it at a distance briefly for the reasons on display in the OP. Play stupid games win stupid prizes etc. Don't like it don't buy it, another will be along to view tomorrow.

Easy enough to show the V5 with the magic number hidden.

If they then want the number for HPI check type then another conversation can be had, but that can be done remotely, if things seem legitimate.

I've got over 3,000 vehicle purchases under my belt.

I know a few people who do the same job with many, many, more purchases than myself.

None of us would pay you/proceed with the purchase without proper inspection of documents we need to see.

I suggest you tell people you wont be allowing them access to the V5 before they travel to buy your car.

Otherwise you may have one upset chappy who's wasted a journey in coming along to buy your car.

I think your missing the point, in selling all my cars over the years I have never had anybody ask to see the V5 before viewing, easy enough to cover the reference number if they want to see the V5 before a test drive.

If somebody did ask to see the V5 before travelling I would look for another buyer as that would just shout scam to me.

My comments were not aimed at the OP

They were in response to Acuity30 comment of not showing the V5 until he'd received payment.

I would not ask for details of V5 over the phone, as you rightly say.

If you'd willingly let two 'dodgy looking guys' look over the V5 before payment you deserve what you get.

You keep changing what you say.

Firstly you said you wouldn't show anyone your V5 until they had paid you.

Secondly you said you might let them see it a bit, presumably covering up the doc ref number?

Now you're saying two "dodgy looking guys" which I'm sure no one would entertain

Make your mind up

There's more than one way to skin a cat.
Gent shows up with cash in hand, well dressed well spoken, asks a lot about the car with genuine interest, responds well to open questioning etc, can see the V5. Typical Gumtree scrote, can see it after payment received or from a distance (depending on my judgement of them) i.e. on a table with all the service history, wouldn't let them go through it or take pics etc.
As for your last line, well clearly the OP did entertain that or did you not read the first post? If all viewers were like those described in the op, no one would see the V5 before payment received.

My comments have not been from the OP's opening post.

They have been from your comment on Wednesday about not showing anyone V5 until they'd handed over the cash.

And another poster saying 100% not showing anyone V5 until they'd paid.

Neither of you mentioned "dodgy looking guys" in those posts, so it reads that you wouldn't show anyone the V5 who's standing there trying to buy your car until they'd paid you.

Anyhow, we are spoiling the thread, no one wants to see two blokes arguing, so PM me if you want to chat more.

Hi there guys, I’m in the same situation.
Just a quick tip might help somebody and might save a few weeks of waiting for nothing.
When you send the pictures to “cio.vehicles” email adress make sure the pictures attached are small sizes , less than 10mb, otherwise they will not receive the pictures and you will not get a bounce back email from them!! Nobody from dvla tells you that, and everytime I’ve phoned up and asked for an updated I’ve been told they working on it, but it was not the case because they had my email was not received in the first place.

Size down pictures using whatever app to like a few kbs!

The car has been posted for sale on multiple platforms, including facebook marketplace where he contacted me. He was keen to see the car, and asked if I can do a video with the engine running so he can listen to the engine to avoid dissapointment, which I belive it was nothing wrong with and made it. He wad happy with, we set up a viewing for the car next day, had a very good walk around and asked if I can show the full service history of the car, that I described in the advert. I took the folder with all the documents and handed him to have a browse thru, little did I know the V5c was in there aswell, but did not wanted to make a scene out of it when i’ve seen his looking on it as dvla advises that you check v5c and vin numbers to match the documents when you want to buy a car.

He then said he is very happy with the car and negociating I’ve knocked out a couple hundred quid off the price for him. He said “its past 7 o clock now, and dvla online service for v5c transfer ( keepership transfer ) are now offline, so I will come back again tommorow in the early hours to pick up the car, pay you and do the transfer online”.

All made sense at the time of discussion , and I’m usually quite suspicios about this kind of transactions, but I’ve googled up and dvla online services are actually 7am to 7pm so I said everything its fine.

He did not took the v5c , I still have it, its just not the latest. He somehow managed to remember the 11 digit code ( remarcable memory if you ask me) and transfered the keepership under his name. Its been nearly 2 months now trying to get my documents back and I’ve been speaking probably with all the department from the dvla and all I can say for some of them its a wonder that they can do their laces without the help of someone else.

All this beeing said, last advisor that i spoke with said that I should relax , and let them do the hard work for me as apparently beeing 2 months in this situation its still “early stages” for them.

thanks.
I always check the log book when buying a car, in fact the last one recently for my lad we took a photo of it so i could do a full hpi check on it - As they (hpi)want the serial number in order to issue a complete guarantee against fraud

So going to be understandable that sellers are going to be cagey about showing the log book going forwards despite legit buyers needing to see it.

I guess taking your id/passport with you may alay any suspicion for the seller.

No worries.
In this day and age, I would not be surprised if scammers carry a fake id or passaport with them just to prove themself selfworthy. I think slowly selling cars private will be more of a problem than a way to get a bit more money for your pride and joy than a p/x at ridiculous price.

A third party by gov should be put in place, that holds in pending a certain amount of money till the transaction is finished similar to how you put down deposit when you renting. Neither the seller or the buyer should have acces to the money untill the transaction its not proven as succesful.

All I can say for now, keep your v5c safe, and if the buyer wants a hpi check, you should provide one to avoid situations like this.

Hi

I luckily got this sorted. I had to email over my vin number within my car. Basically I had to prove the car was mine.

I shortly sold the car ASAP and washed my hands as like you I had no where else to park it and was worried that they’d come back. I also paid Audi to reprogram the keys at a cost of £200
Hi ! Can you please let me know how long did you wait until everything was resolved!? Thanks !

This issue could so easily be solved. Surely all the DVLA need to do is have to 11-digit code which you can use to check the vin / keeper / do a HPI check and then a second code (much like the 3-digit number on the back of a credit card) to change the keeper. It could even be hidden behind a ‘scratch off’ area on the paperwork. So easy.

You could check the paperwork, complete the sale, scratch off the additional digits and input both into the DVLA online form.

This would never happen again and they’d save themselves a lot of hassle fixing documents.

But.....that would be sensible. It'll never happen.

I bought car from private seller on gumtree.
Seller had l
Log book
Bank card on his name exactly on log book
I checked HPI check on web paid £13.19.
All came good.
It was Sunday 11/02/2024.
On Monday 12/02/2024 I messaged seller to post V5 to DVLA. No reply. I called in evening and number came invalid.
So I called police. Gave registration number of car police said it's not any of in bad records. You can drive the car but speak to DVLA. As I am taxi driver and I need log book for badge.
I spoke to DVLA on 13/02/2024 Tuesday I gave number from new keepers slip and lady transfer my call to CIO. And CIO advise me to put car on drive way and send all vin , chassis number all details etc.
I spoke to bank they said car not been declared as stolen or anything wrong they can't creat fraud claim Same police and same actions fraud team but they advise me to go to CAB.
When I checked my old log book against this new keepers slip it's printed and only I can say when I put both printed and genuine side by side.
Scammers are there. Don't believe to good to be true.
Check
Driving licence
Log book and match with old if you have one .
Check HPI.
Check VIN and chassis number.
Address to go in where it's registered DL and log book both
Same account you transfer all money. If possible ask bank to hold it until car gets transferred.
Ask legit proof of address bank statement. Council letter etc
