Funny how the X-type was slated for being based on a Mondeo, but no-one seems to care with the Evoque / Freelander?
Though it undoubtedly drives very nicely, the Evoque is without doubt an example of style over substance; the latest X3 for example is similarly priced, much more spacious and practical, has a better diesel engine and probably drives just as well, yet the Evoque certainly seems to be more popular.
Park them next to each other and you will see why ... the Beemer is fugly !Though it undoubtedly drives very nicely, the Evoque is without doubt an example of style over substance; the latest X3 for example is similarly priced, much more spacious and practical, has a better diesel engine and probably drives just as well, yet the Evoque certainly seems to be more popular.

We have an Evoque, a Pure SD4 Auto. It has the Panny roof, tech pack and power tailgate. Std 18" alloys and it rides very nicely but handles with aplomb. It feels like it was set-up by somebody who really likes driving. Quite often on the back roads near home, I leave cars in my wake and have no issue maintaining speed and making progress on 60 roads - it's a great car! Many people who haven't driven one say it's "style over substance" but it isn't to me. It's an incredibly capable car and a delight to drive and own.
The only niggles I have are:
1) It has a naff turning circle and
2) The iphone integration (apparently you can either use the phone function or the ipod function but not both at the same time!)
But the former you just drive around and the latter is hardly a deal-breaker.
Every time I get out of the car after driving the family around in it, I'm always telling the Mrs - I really like your car and I do - it's a really great car.

I was having some problems with my Tuscan in August, the week before we were going to drive down to Malaga. I was very seriously considering taking the Evoque instead because I knew it would be a great drive.
When we got there, the villa was half way up a mountain accessed by a dirt track. The Evoque crossed my mind many times but the Tuscan being another great British car managed OK
Really really don't like the styling at all. Screams "tarts handbag" especially in oh-so-trendy white. Ridiculous High price even for a poverty-spec won't prevent them depreciating massively due to the sheer number they are pumping out. Didn't enjoy my time in one at all, and fail to see what all the fuss is about...

if you read what i have said i said i liked the look of it i just dont see the point
i prefer function over form, hence why i like the Legacy and my integrale, there is nothing on the integrale that does not need to be there.

Now its comments like yours that really worry me a bit. European Legislation is doing its best to restrict us all to look alike eco boxes devoid of flair and ability, why do you have a problem with people wanting a car that looks different? The fact is that Range Rover has absolutely nailed their target audience and the country as a whole is now benefiting from that vision.
If 95% of the critics on here had any input into this product then the public would not have got the car they wanted, those jobs would not have been created and the UK balance of payment would not look as healthy.
If the Legacy and the Outback where what the market wanted then the Evoque would not have a place, but that is clearly not the case.
I remember seeing the Evoque concept at the FOS a few years ago, and made a point of tracking down one of their marketing people to encourage them not to dilute the design at all as even at that point I knew it would be a success. Truthfully I never thought they would do it. Thankfully they had the vision to follow through.
Which now leads us onto the new Full Fat Range Rover, which again has come in for a lot of criticism on PH. But I again would be happy to bet huge amounts of money that that car will also be a massive success for RR. The company currently has the right people making the right decisions, and as a Brit I am very proud of that
I will defend anyone’s right not to like the car, but don’t critisise those that do, the motoring world would be a very boring place if we all liked the same thing

Hang on, why does everyone on this website have to praise the almighty British industry at every opportunity? Should we laud those industrious little Japanese workers when they put out a st new Mitsubishi lifestyle 4x4? Hoorah for those German fellows for another soulless VW Passat?
Gets on soapboxBecause without UK manufacturing (primary and secondary) the rest of the economy will come crashing down, converting materials and therefore adding value through desirability is what we need to do to trade our way out of the mess we are in. Not more fking tertiary services cutting hair, selling food and working for councils (Obviously excluding city banking that funds the above and import/exports money)
Gets off soapbox
Struggling with the style over substance image of these things...pricey and you just know they're not put together with the same engineering qualities and bullet proof reliability you'd expect for such a costly motor...maybe having spent a few years in Dubai my view is jaded but you'd see time and again 3 yr old LandRovers and RangeRovers showing their age well before their years compared to Cayennes and Landcruisers...3 yrs time the evoque has this to contend with as well as being a little overstyled...which will date quickly.
Perhaps it's about time LR invested in reliability over 'bling' then I personally might buy one.....having the accolade of Britain least reliable car is not going to be glossed over by the likes of Victoria Beckham endorsing their products..

Plus, claiming a car is British therefore it's great is why you no longer have a motorcycle industry! Not saying that this particular car won't sell by the truckload, but Nationalism has no place in competitive industry.
Evoque wins 2012 "womans car of the year" award
http://www.autoblog.com/2012/10/08/ladies-love-it-...
The BMW 3 Series won first place in the Family Car category
The Porsche 911 took the top Sports Car
The Honda Civic won Economy Car honors
No beatle or mini cooper in that list???

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but you may like to add the caveat that a lot of British workers are currently benefiting from this cars success
Hang on, why does everyone on this website have to praise the almighty British industry at every opportunity? That aside, I love our Evoque too. Brilliant cars.

That's cause the X-Type wasn't a very good car.. the Evoque on the other hand is. You can forgive a lot when the end product is a success.Though it undoubtedly drives very nicely, the Evoque is without doubt an example of style over substance; the latest X3 for example is similarly priced, much more spacious and practical, has a better diesel engine and probably drives just as well, yet the Evoque certainly seems to be more popular.
