I have driven the old 750iL circa 1991 vintage and that was very smooth and quiet and the torque was amazing!
When I get round to replacing the 528 in 2 or 3 years maybe, I am hoping for a late E38 740 or 750i if I'm on a bit more money then. Gorgeous carsKentish said:
What are the materials of the X300 body, mainly aluminium?
I have never seen one with rust on; the XJ40's appeared to corrode a bit but not too bad.
Steel. The arches go. As far as the 12 is concerned, yes it is/was one of the great wonders of the world but the supercharged 6 has more power and twice the fuel economy.I have never seen one with rust on; the XJ40's appeared to corrode a bit but not too bad.

Yes, I like the old classic rangey
Very smooth V8 and soft ride.
But, that air suspension when it goes wrong!

When i had mine, i went for one with springs. TBH when the air springs break just convert them into normal ones. Kits aboit £300ish and a monkey could fit it.
But the RR is nowhere near as refined as a Series 3 XJ12, Lexus LS400/430, RR/Bentley or a newish Bristol.
BTW, I'm not a snob/rich kid/yahoo/rah/gentry just like the way the classic Rangey makes me feel.
Fantastic lording it over the peasants though.....

I've been in some of the current E class Mercs and I was surprised at how much road noise was evident inside.
I cannot really understand this new trend for run-flat tyres and sportiness on luxury cars. It completely defeats the whole p[oint of them to me as the noise and comfort are so poor.richardxjr said:

XJ40 is a different matter though. Pre '92 were pretty bad in the following areas:
Bonnet leading edge and corners.
Front wings & arches.
Rear wings (particularly where puddles form at the rear most edge) & arches.
Bulkhead.
Bottom of A pillars.
Bootlid - recess around number plate and corners.
Post '92 was much better as the paint process had been improved. The main area of concern still being the bonnet and base of front wing, just behind the arch - although these areas were nowhere near as bad as a pre '92 car.

and my personal favourite, S classes, more specificallt the S65
I'd argue that a standard S500 on small wheels would be more refined than the firmly suspended, big wheeled AMG version, but that's just IMHO. S65 for Lambo smoking
