Outback does 27-30mpg on motorways long journeys, 14-18 round town, though my old T5 did 9 yes nine round town.
What you loose on economy you really gain on purchase price as they very good value for performance, reliability and equipment......ignoring the stereo, replace the speakers adn you have a very very good car, that is compfy, goes anywjere adn can carry and tow loads....
tried hyper-miling once and you cna just get 32mpg if you go 55mpg and are gentle....
Neighbours Merc-G Wagon Snow Tyres....
tyres.....wether 2wd or 4wd, get some snow tyres, save the pain of chains and damn good laugh in the snow....plus they brilliant in muddy fields and wet weather....etc.....
Thanks for the info, there is an immaculate 3.0 H6 near me so if I can conivnce the other half I may go and have a look. Re snow tyres, I know how good they are I have been running a set on my BM for the past few years but in severe snow it can still be 'interesting' to dive, so given I want more space a 4x4 on snow tyres should fit the bill for me perfectly......provided I can convince the other half. What you loose on economy you really gain on purchase price as they very good value for performance, reliability and equipment......ignoring the stereo, replace the speakers adn you have a very very good car, that is compfy, goes anywjere adn can carry and tow loads....

Just a short note to give some feedback on how the XC70 fared last weeking going to the Alps and back.
1700 miles in a week and averaged 45mpg at 80-85mph on the French and Swiss Motorways.
No snow to speak of so can't comment on snow ability over what I stated earlier.
Only downside was a slight "nervousness" at 80mph plus which I guess is down to the raised suspension and fat tyres. Perhaps a V70 AWD would have been better.

Very odd suggestion but what about a Renault Scenic RX4? The diesels run on fresh air.

Find one without gearbox or driveline issues ..PICTURE..
I had this dilemma a while back but with a more limited budget and ended up going for a Jag X type 2.5 AWD, I've taken it to the Alps twice this season and it has been superb although I think your budget allows you a few more options. I would also say it is a bit thirsty if pushing on...

i know this post is old now but just though i add my 2p worth.
ill start by saying can not agree more about the tyres... its all about the tyres! infact in the last snow just gone iv pulled out servel proper 4x4 most impresivly (imbarsingly for him) pulled a new disco 4 out the edg, ( 4wd is no good if you havent the correct rubber!) this all in my 2000 2.4t xc70 with 150000 on it, iv been running allseason vredestein on it all year round, they have been ace! iv been up 2ft deep lanes not got stuck once.
but i started to want abit more poke... so had a go in a foz and a leg r spec b (very nice) ended up finding a mint allroad 2.7 manule its awsome!! as a drives car, it goes like stink, the awd is fantastic and the car just feel very tite.
the thing i found was getting going is all very well in the snow, its stopping that the problem! iv come out the xc70 in the snow driving as if it not there. got in the allroad with good M/S tyres on and it was scarey!
ill finish by saying im missing the auto xc70! as an every day work horse it was a plesure, like driving in an armchair, the layout in the car is the best imo, it felt like a tank. and the boot shap lends its self far better that all the others it seems twic the size.
the allroad a more involving drive but going away and day to day id take the volvo every time.
o and this could come in hand http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/
