The senario Garlic quotes is the same as I have had, the momentum is going to push the back end out regardless.

That's always been my understanding, and agrees with my experience of Supras (with LSD) and BMWs (without LSD).
LSD allows you to swing the back end out (it limits slip, allowing power to the road). Standard differential lets the power waste away as wheel slip.
Add to this the fact that the LSD-equipped car can effectively push from one corner only, which I suspect can introduce sideways motion when otherwise going straight ahead.
