Rapid estate cars v diesel estate
Discussion
Staying on topic, that's an interesting selection of cars back on page 4. The scooby looks the most exciting to drive, the Volvo/Saab the most luxurious (always struggle to spell that word!), the Alfa looks the sexiest (IMHO), the Mondeo is arguably the most capable all rounder (again IMHO) and the Vauxhall is probably the most car for your money.
Any one of them would do what you want. There's not a dud amongst them and they've all got advantages and disadvantages. You'll find plenty of people who'll say that you must get the X and you mustn't get the Y, but frankly that just bias and prejudice talking.
That means that it's road test time! Park your bum in each and see which one tickles your fancy. As they say.
If it were me, my sensible head would be saying Mondeo and my petrol head would be saying scoobie. The mondeo is a very under-rated car (I've had two) but it's not the most exciting in the world. Never owned a scoobie, though I've been a passenger in other people's. That's the one to get your pulse going.
The others don't do it for me. That's not to say that they might not work for you. As I said, we're all biassed and prejudiced! ;-)
The road test is the thing. A few times when I've bought a car, I was absolutely convinced that I needed one thing but then the road test totally changed my mind. A few years back, I wanted a prestigous small family/commute car. On paper the ideal seemed to be either golf or audi a3 (which is a golf in a suit). But when I tried both I just couldn't get on with them. Ended up with a car that I had initially ruled out on paper, just because of the way it drove in the test drive. Sometimes it's a good thing to have an open mind.

OP, now Celtic Meathead has gone, can I just add that our Aero est is LPG'd, gets 24-5 mpg, roughly 35 mpg equiv. I don't see a downside yet, and would be achievable withing your budget ![biggrin](/inc/images/biggrin.gif)
Oi ![biggrin](/inc/images/biggrin.gif)
The 95 is a very old design car I'll agree the drivers seat in the Vector is lovely really comfy and the boot space huge. But the look of the rear is not good
It isn't fast
Oddly people are now starting to talk about torque instead of peower to show how fast a petrol is.... Yet when there is a diesel thread when you do that the diesel haters say it's all ablit power only as torque is how big a stone you can roll once while power is how fast you can roll that stone.
Going back to the quoted similar times for a auto 330d v a manual aero 0-60. Firstly 0-60 isn't the diesels forte it is midrange in gear acceleration likewise auto is slower in the 0-60 v the manual equivalent.

Fast is a subjective term. A formula one driver would consider most road cars to be incredibly slow. My elderly Mum thinks that 50 mph is fast. Most of us are somewhere in the middle.
We're helping a bloke choose a car. If he says that a particular make or model is fast enough for him then fair enough.
This is not "what's the best car?". It's not "what's the fastest car?". It's "what's the right car for the OP?"
Graphs and bhp per tonne not required.

But it's not OP saying the Aero is fast it's a poster to the thread. We're helping a bloke choose a car. If he says that a particular make or model is fast enough for him then fair enough.

That is all.

Rather picked up the ball and ran with it, didn't you? We had AMGs, McLarens, Leons, and all manner of irrelevances, all whilst others were actually addressing OP's post

It is not fast.
Title of the thread is fast estate cars Aero is not. Unless of course you consider a Leon Cupra Mk1 180bhp to be fast which it isn't.
But the Saab is faster both to 60 and over a quarter mile, by about a second in each. Once they're both moving the difference is even bigger as power to weight ratio is a smaller factor and it becomes more about power. Not a huge difference really, but it's that bit quicker. It is not fast.

No it's not as fast as some of the offerings from Audi, BMW, Mercedes, etc, but it is fast for a sub £5k estate. It can't be compared to those much more expensive estates you spoke of. They cost more in every single way. It's like comparing a Boxster against an MP4-12C because they're both 2 seater sports cars.

35 mpg equiv - surely it should be around 49mpg -if lpg is @half price of petrol?![biggrin](/inc/images/biggrin.gif)

Not really, he's been banging on about how a Saab 95 Aero is not a quick car and he drives some oil burner.
He drives a quick oil burner. And you're clearly trolling.Clearly not as quick as your M5 although I suspect on, say a 500 mile journey, he might arrive first as you'll have stopped twice for fuel. He won't have stopped once. And it weighs about 200kgs less. Never "got" the reason why BMW stuck a torque lite F1 derived engine in a near 2 tonne barge. The RS5 got slated for it's engine mismatch, the M5 seemed to somehow get away with it.
At least the new M5 has an engine suited to it's bulk.
