RE: Ford Fiesta Black Edition: Driven (briefly)

Lot of people say the Swift sport, ostensibly this vehicle's main competitor, is ugly.
Think Ford have done Suzuki a massive favour though, because not only is this a couple grand more with lots less kit, but put the swift next to this monstrosity and it looks a beaut.
The Ford looks ugly but also aggressive and modern. Think Ford have done Suzuki a massive favour though, because not only is this a couple grand more with lots less kit, but put the swift next to this monstrosity and it looks a beaut.
The Swift is not ugly, but it looks boring, as does the Fabia VRS. It looks like an last generation car that old people would drive.
None of that matters to me, but I think it probably does to the people who would be interested in this car.
Yeah those massive 1100kg cars with only 140bhp, what are they thinking of? That thing will hardly move when you add 14% (2 passengers) to its mass.
I imagine the engine/turbo will need replacing about as often as any other petrol 140bhp turbo engine. Ford won't have tested them at all, or installed them in hundreds of thousands of vehicles around the world in the last 2 years. Oh wait...
I'm not saying it isn't hideous to look at and poor value compared to the ST, but 140bhp really isn't under-powered, and turbo technology has come a long long way since the 1970s.

Sorry to bump an old topic but saves starting a new one.
Any owner reports on these?
Been pricing up a Focus ST-2 Diesel or one of these.
Focus STD is a bit overkill for my needs, i.e short commute not too many miles.
This seems to fit the bill, cheap insurance, cheap to run and I get privilege discount through my work.
Perhaps a Fiesta ST but again seems overkill for my needs, I already have two weekend cars for fun (classic mini) and camping (vw camper).
This seems a good middle ground to me.

Have had my Red Edition for a couple of weeks, and first impressions are very good. Have covered 800 miles, so still being careful but the ecoboost has enough "go". I do too many miles to have an ST, and Red Edition ownership should be perfect. Cheap to run, fun on a B road but comfortable enough for longer distances. I paid £13k for a new one with some options, which seems ok value.
This will be interesting to you: http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/compari...
Mountune will be releasing upgrades through the year, and that will be tempting. Others are already claiming remaps to 170bhp...

Right, I have been lucky enough to have been provided with the Fiesta red edition as a courtesy car and have previously owned a Swift Sport, which I really liked.
As much as I hate to admit it, the Ford is superior in every way - save for possibly it's looks imo.
The engine is just 'silly' for a 1.0 litre and pulls through every gear like a hammer - where the Suzuki would be gasping for breath. There is not a chance that the Suzuki would keep up on long sweeping 'B' Roads. The 1.0 litre is quite a bit faster - whatever the manufacturers figures say.
Would I buy one? not at over £15k I wouldn't. But it is as much fun as the 306 Rallye I used to own!

Believe me, you will be surprised how sprightly this is, even with four on board.I imagine the engine/turbo will need replacing about as often as any other petrol 140bhp turbo engine. Good to see a review against the Swift. Thanks for that.As much as I hate to admit it, the Ford is superior in every way - save for possibly it's looks imo.

Still enjoying mine, now with 4000 miles on it, and a morning spent around the Silverstone GP circuit also done. It's a decent bit of kit. As you say, through the gears it pulls really well. Gearing is a little strange (at silverstone the limiter in third was kicking in at just under 90mph, but then you can also happily cruise about at 30mph in fourth..), but I'm used to that now. I'm not fussed about 0-60 times, but read that AutoExpress timed it at 8.6sec.
Lap of Silverstone here (I'd never driven Silverstone before, or this car on track, so was getting used to it all.. so lot's to improve on): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KB5M-fr-vug
I got mine new at £12.5k, and think that's a fair price.
