I find it funny how large a proportion of posters here are picking holes in a car that, to the market, don't really exist.
Fair enough that it's not perfect for the average hot hatch / 3 series driving petrol head poster on here, they're entitled to state that as it's a discussion forum after all.
What's really funny though is that some people allude to Porsche having made some sort of mistake by not tailoring it to the sort of niche buyers (I say buyers, most of the people with the aforementioned opinions can't afford it) that are actual petrol heads.
The average Turbo buyer doesn't care about:
Slight increase in weight
Slight loss of steering feel
Phasing out of manual gearbox
Will probably like:
Lots of optional extras available
Performance figures for their ego
A bit of bling
Being as comfortable as possible whilst still being in an iconic sports car
Plenty of driver aids so they can extract performance and not worry about lacking skill.
They give the market what it wants, loads of people will buy it, the end.
Just because the car isn't for you doesn't mean there's something wrong with it.

A comparison between the Turbo and the GTR although valid in terms of performance is not when it comes to buying. I've driven a GTR and I found it tremendously quick and enjoyable. Having spent time driving a 997 Turbo and Turbo S, whilst also very fast, the experience wasn't as enjoyable as it was tame and lacking. Although my 'experience' in the GTR was more enjoyable, I'm not in the market for a Nissan GTR. Needless to say, I'm not in the market for a car I didn't enjoy and, despite not having driven the 991 Turbo, it's clear that the car is cut from the same cloth as the 997 Turbo and, unless I find to the contrary when I do drive it, I won't be buying one.
To be fair to the Turbo, it's a GT car and does as it's intended and does it well. As a driving enthusiast, the Turbo is not for me since there are other GT cars I find more appealing. However, never say never so maybe when I'm older

I don't think this 911 "moves the game on" however.
Making a car go fast using 4WD, torque vectoring for max traction, and a stack of short ratio double clutch gears is nothing new however. Which is why I raised the GTR in this context - because it did it first.
The Porsche is awesome. But it has really only caught up.
I think the new GT3, on the other hand, does move things on. The GT3 is better and more desirable than a 458 IMO and substantially cheaper and free of chest medallions.
The main point I took from that review was "unsettled at high speeds". Well that's just great then....
In fact I don't believe the 3 settings of tyre pressures mumbo jumbo eg:
We (Porsche Germany) set the wrong ones because we didn't think a bunch of journalists, with a new Porsche Turbo, next to an Autobahn, would try to go fast...
