To be honest the E60 looked woeful in SE spec
That's a good point, most BMWs look a bit lackluster in non-sport spec (E39, E46 etc) - be interesting to see what the Sport model will be like, with more aggressive bumpers, sills etc
Not sure I've ever noticed a difference to the degree it mattered. You either like these designs or you don't and no fannying up of the basic design helps.
I disagree. The facelifted E46 coupe with the sport pack is probably the finest looking non-M bimmer to come out of Munich. The SE spec had a strange front bumper a weird strip of black plastic running through the centre of the rear one and looked disproportionate.

The BMW shape responds well to more aggressive styling.
Agree - most standard spec BMWs (especially the more modern ones) don't look brilliant. M-Sport version brighten them up and make them more aggressive.

However, look at the E30, E32 and E34, they looked good even in basic guise!
yes The E34 looked superb in SE spec; I don't know why BMW cant release a slightly newer design of this car. Everyone I know thinks old BMW's look brilliant.

In 8 years time we'll all be pining for our beloved 'old' 5 series when the new model is unveiled.

As a statement of relative wealth it has (unfortunately) succeeded...
Which pit of envy did you fish that one out from? Is an upper-mainstream saloon really so offensive, especially when many will be the basic model?

As for the design it looks to my eye like a BMW, although happily less "Bangled" than the last 5-series which was IMO horrid.
No pit of envy and an upper-mainstream saloon doesn't need to be offensive, which is my point. It's a shame this one (in my entitled opinion) is...

This is a huge step forward for the 5 series. The e60 was very akward from most angles but this car wich is not a Msport looks good! This car will sell like hot cakes and if you have an e60 get out sharpish because there will be a glut on the second hand market.

These cars happen to be lined up in descending order of their beauty and design integrity too, from the left...

Seems such a shame the family picture features a facelift (so 1995) E34 yet the prefacelift (So 1996...) E39.

You are so right, only that Bangle one comes last.

Must be the fisheye lenses they use but i saw a new GT the other night and it just looked like any other BMW. Much though I was looking forward to pouring scorn and hatred on it, it was all I could do to raise a mild indifference. Balance can be restored in suburbia, the hype is nothing and the car is boring to look at.
