I'd love one to be honest but I really struggle to see how they're holding their value.

The majority were bought on tick by the kind of people who really can't afford to run them - I would imagine, due to increased fuel prices and a poor mpg figure, there would be a plethora on the market at rock bottom prices.

The oldest ones are now 6 years old with around 80k on the clock so why are they not dropping below 6k?

True, they are holding their value strangely-well but I wouldn't buy one solely for the pitiful fuel economy (25mpg average and the likes).

A third of list price for what's still a great car, even after six years/80k - I can't see them getting much cheaper any time soon.

I guess you're wrong!

Petrol's cheap, I'd rather run a £10k ST on 25mpg than suffer the depreciation of a £30k BMW on 35mpg.

I've no intention of selling mine for a few years yet.

From what I've heard on PH and from friends and colleagues who own or have owned them, 25mpg is an optimistic estimate!

Still not bad cars though.

The standard focus is a good car, I'd imagine that with this engine it's a rather nice car for many people. Practical, reliable and not too big- a car that serves the needs of many. I'd guess that it has had an image boost from the RS as well.

£7-8k seems fair to me.

Up your budget to around 10 and you would get a much newer (possibly facelift car).

The focus that the car is based on has proved generally free of huge faults and its ubiquity makes getting it fixed cheap. Added to which the ST has an engine which when fitted to bigger heavier Volvos can cover 200,000 miles or more. Oh and the 225ps figure is mated to a diesel like torque curve and it isn't beyond the reach of most owners to modify them in stages during ownership to stop them becoming bored.

If people can live with the lack of fuel economy there isn't much else to chalk up against them.

Who cares about the mpg. I bought mine expecting around 20mpg and thats what I get.

As for price, I paid £12k for mine when it was 2 years old, & I felt that was a rather good price for an ST3. Now 2 years later, Its probally worth about £8.5 / 9k. That to me seems a lot of depretiation in 2 years.

Sorry but an ST is an everyday car, and there's no way in hell I could justify commuting with a car that gets 20mpg...that's supercar territory. No wonder they've changed to a 2.0 Ecoboost engine for the new ST.

My total daily drive is 8 miles, all around town in a hilly area with massive traffic works going on.

I was going to get a BMW 330Ci cabrio (manual) and thats even worse. Someone in work had one a year or so back and he was getting 13mpg around town.

Dont know. Where we live is very hilly and work is in town. If its clear, I can be home in 12mins, if its traffic, it takes about 30mins, so that uses the fuel.

I've covered around 35,000 miles in mine and it averages 25-26 mpg. Most of that is a stop- start 30 mile round trip commute too - you can see much better economy on steady A-road and m-way driving if you keep it under 80.

Oddly, remapping and releasing another 50bhp has seen the economy increase modestly..... Go figure.

It's only 20 in town. I'm seeing over 30 from mine but I rarely drive her in town.

I could see 35+ if I behaved 24/7, but that's just not in me.

Horses for courses. I suspect I wouldn't want the 4 cylinder replacement and I just couldn't cope with a Clio.

Why not? 41mpg on motorways, 35mpg getting a move on and no way is an ST more fun!

We've had a Clio 197 and a Clio 200 cup and neither saw much over 25mpg albeit mostly b road journeys!

Sounds low, although as I remember the 200 is over 150Kg heavier than the 182 Cup.

Have to say out of all the big hot hatches the ST is one of my favs, on looks, sound and drive.

That said, if you don't need a big boot and seating for 5 there are other fast/faster cars out there for similar money.
