i turned 17 in september, passed my theory and taking my practical in feb, I dunno what my first car is going to be :/ but probably won't get it for another year or so due to insurance ( i was quoted £ £7000 a year on a nissan micro 1.0!!)

massive fan of the bmw e30 and the 316 or 318 are around £700-£800 but i'm sure insurance on that would be ridiculously high even in a years time.

just wondering what people usually go for with a budget of around £1000 and any suggestions.smile

Since you have no rush on getting a car. You should look into doing pass plus. And if you can, join IAM and do their course however im not sure if you can do it without a car.

Sorry to hear about your insurance problems :/ Paid nearly £300 a month for a corsa when i first passed my test.

If you don't mind having a tracker in your car then have a look at coverbox insurance.

Look at something out of the ordinary. I'm 20 in a few days and am paying considerably less on a 2.2 Vauxhall Omega than a 1.4 Corsa. Had a diesel Vectra before this and that was cheap too. Try Aviva.

As stated above; try old repmobiles, volvos, skodas etc. Effectively all the cars you thought you didn't want, but are actually loads better than those you wanted!

I was quoted £3000 for a 1.0 11 year old Corsa on my name and £1200 on my dads.
A classic car is easily half of that but I've been warned to expect leaks, breakdowns and little or no cabin luxuries.
You have to balance up whether it's worth buying a worse car to save on running costs.

Have you considered a moped or small motorike if you're only doing short, low speed journeys?

Sounds tiny!

My first car at 17 was a Nova 1.3L (quite rare - Like a 1.3 SR but without the bodykit or rev counter). Insured TPFF for about £800.

Before you start imagining driving anything fancy, run your details through some insurance comparison sites.

Hi Gawri. I turned 17 back in March, and I suffered the same quotes as you. As Although I am older than you, I still qualify for the same quotes, as I am still officially and legally 17 years old.

However £7000 is rather steep on a 1.0 Micra, considering I am quoted £3085 on a 1.6 Citroen C3 VTR Plus 3 Door. The car belongs to me and is on my own policy which is 3rd Party F&T.

I also seen that your budget is £1000, my Citroen cost me little under £4000. It all relies on what you look for in a car, I looked for safety after almost being killed in a crash! But Cars varies through and through, people might prefer lightweight and agile ect... however if I was to recommend a car under £1000 it would definitely be the Pug 107, however its guaranteed you will be noted as "Boy Racer" as the Corsa, its highly popular within their selection.

The only information I can give you is to keep shopping around Comparison networks and brokers.

Insurance is also highly dependent on the area you live, if you live in an area with a high crime rate or high accident rate you can guarantee your insurance to be pushed up £1000 or so.

Asda Insurance on Comparethemarket.com have got a good deal on at the moment, any cars registered before a "56" but after a "51" plate are giving amazing discounts, as why my insurance is so low. I was quoted £7800 originally before finding out this deal.

Cheers
Mark

Again, go for not obvious choices. If it's not a car that 17 year olds regularly put into ditches, chances are it'll be reasonable for a 17 year old to insure.

Look for mid size engined, uncommon with youth cars.

Audi 80's have a range of engines and body styles.

Find a local IAM or similar person to help teach you some skills.

Not particularly go on a course but just offer you some tips on safe defensive driving.

It doesn't matter if someone else hits you your insurance will go up, so find out how you can help yourself to avoid the situation where possible.

This
Will help bring your insurance down quite a bit as it did with me at your age.

Anything small engined really, Old swifts , Corsa ,Fiats try running them all through insurance web sites to get a idea.

I ignored everyones advice and my first car was a MK2 XR2. £1400 for the car and about 800 quid a year to insure it tpft some 18yrs ago.Ate tyres for breakfast and only put the best on it.Damn thing skinted me until 3 yrs later I stuffed it into a ditch.Would have another one tomorrow.

If you can afford it get you want, back in those days a hot hatch of some sort was "THE" car to have.

How about a facelift Civic EJ9 1.4? Why? Well: Group 4 insurance , great on fuel, would have no problem keeping up with cars that have a 1.6 from the same era (1.6 golf for example), and as its a Honda it should be pretty bombproof so you wouldn't have to worry about spending to much money on maintenence.

Hi mate. Also 17 here and I've been driving (Passed) for about 3-4 months now.

I'm currently driving a 1.25L 52' plate Fiesta Finesse(Facelift) and I find it to be completely reliable, comfortable and cheap on insurance. As well as that it still has enough power to not annoy you (Can pull itself up hills etc), they're pretty good in ice as I've found out.

Overall I would say they are a great first car. Although I'm sure some may disagree I love it.

Hope this helps!

Also! I forgot to mention sorry. Price Comparison sites LIE. If you go direct to any one of the companies that quote you on the comparison site the price will half at least (Bar some).

My first car was a old series 3 Land Rover. I loved it and reasonable insurance prices as well. really good for afirst car if you can put up with the slow speeds, not getting up to 60 in less than 5 mins and the occasional drip of water on your head!

But as said loved it for a first car!
