Noisy gearbox/clutch
Discussion
My Rover 216 GTI (1991) is making wierd noises, wonder if anyone here can enlighten me as to what's causing them?
There seems to be two distinct problems;
At idle with the clutch disengaged there is a whirring noise, which disappears when you press the clutch.
When the car is moving there's a very pronounced whine/rumble noise in first and second gear which gets quieter as you select higher gears. Dipping the clutch and leaving it in gear has no effect on this noise but putting it in neutral stops it.
The volume of this second noise is related to the car's road speed.
To my mind they sound similar and I wonder if they might actually be symptoms of the same problem?
The first noise sounds like a thrust bearing to me, but the Haynes manual also says 'worn input shaft'.
It's worth mentioning that I've only had the car for a little over 12 months and it was fine when I first bought it.
It's also worth mentioning that the clutch was replaced just before I collected the car and it's been terrible with vibrations while I'm taking up drive.
I've checked all the ususal causes, gearbox/engine oil doesn't seem to be getting in there, the engine/gearbox mounts are all ok etc etc.
Looks like they fitted a dodgy part and I'm guessing that's what's caused this noise. (BTW I tried to take it back and failed - that's a long story).
Sorry for the long post - anyone able to offer suggestions?

Even with the clutch disengaged parts of the gearbox are still turning, when you put your foot on the clutch it stops because those parts are no longer turning. It is unlikely to have anything to do with the thrust bearing.
Noisy low gears getting quieter as you move up higher and then to a “direct” gear would suggest a knackered box.
The taking up drive thing could be contamination, broken springs etc.
I would say you need a new gearbox and clutch. Hopefully I will be wrong.

Nah... your all wrong.
The tartan rug needs replacing.
Placement is also important in Rovers too .. must be on rear parcel shelf..

Al,
I had identical problems on my 214 - noisy when clutch up in neutral, and some when when in gear.
It was the gearbox input shaft bearings. Pain to strip down, but parts are cheap. Make sure you're not being taken for a ride here.
The cause IIRC was a dodgy clutch leading to damaged engine mounts and lots of engine movement.

This is a honda gearbox I'm afraid, much nastier to play with - check on ebay, you'll see about five 216 gti's being sold spares or repair due to some gearbox gremlin or other. A search on google for 'rover 216GTI gearbox sale' brings up reams of 'WANTED' ads for the box.
Looks like it's a common problem. I've been underneath and checked what he's told me, it'll all true. Given that he's offering to fir the bits for free while he does the clutch (if I can aquire) them I doubt he's exageratted anything.
Nevermind - starting the search for a spare gearbox today...
