Just driven Spa

Last night. Well the old 9 mile pre-1979 circuit anyway. From Les Combes to a bit before Blanchimont (going clockwise).
Great driving roads and it’s amazing to think whilst your bombing along these country roads that Jackie Steward et al were doing the same thing in F1 cars just over 30 years ago. The roads are so narrow and there are so many roadside hazards right up to the kerb in many places. You can see why they had to stop using it for racing.
The Masta Kink is a lot tighter that it looks on the map. Apparently race cars were taking this flat.
The stretch from Stavelot to where the road closes a bit before Blanchimont as the new circuit joins it could do with resurfacing as it goes nowhere now and is a bit neglected.
The Belgians have very kindly left the “new” Holowell banked curve (added after the war) one way in the direction of the old race track. So you can bomb into it taking a semi racing line without having to worry about oncoming traffic
The only bit I couldn’t find was the Malmedy chicane. I think it may have been a lay-by which I found but can’t be sure.
The whole place reeks of motor racing history. I’m not sure if they still open the modern circuit up for public traffic anymore but it was closed last night for the 1000 Kms LMES race this weekend. It would be great to drive the full pre-war circuit.
A track day on the modern circuit is next on the list
