Overtaking during a lane change – poor form?

My question is this: If you are changing lane behind another car at the same time should you always leave space for the car in front to change lane or, is it OK to overtake them as part of the lane change and expect them to wait for you to come past before making their lane change?

I had a situation this morning – actually I have it many mornings but this morning it got particularly ugly. Going down a motorway slip road at what I considered a respectable speed with an A6 behind me. There’s a HGV on the inside lane going past the slip road who can’t pull out because of traffic. So I slow down to filter in behind the HGV. As I slow down matey boy in the A6 is now right up my chuff. As I reach the end of the slip road and go to change lane behind the HGV Mr A6 decides to nail it and try to do a banzi charge for the outside lane. In doing so he pulls out from behind me into the inside lane, realises he’s go nowhere to go in the middle lane and is accelerating hard so, tries to come alongside me thus occupying the space I was about to change lane into. I’ve had this happen quite a lot and usually end up aborting the lane change, braking hard as I am running out of slip road and then changing lane behind the offending knob. This morning I was feeling a bit belligerent so I continued my lane change causing the A6 to brake to leave me space between him and the HGV. Cue lots of sounding the horn and flashing of lights from the A6 which then continued for the next half mile as he came alongside in the middle lane and continued to vent his spleen at me.

Sounds like the A6 got it all wrong, misjudged his speed and the traffic on the motorway, which ended up with him undertaking you to get on the motorway and that seemed to leave you "hanging" as it were.

Not sure the move into his space was wise but he certainly messed it up for both of you there.

A6 was overtaking not undertaking. We were both moving from the slip road onto the motorway he just tried to overtake me as I was doing it.

If he was there first you should wait no matter how annoying it may seem. Perhaps i've misunderstood your situation?

Pulling out and overtaking a car that's already signalling right is daft.

I think your particular situation would depend on how the lane markings went, but generally I'd say the overtaker is in the wrong. If you have to make the car you overtake change direction or speed you've got it totally wrong imo.

If he was already in that lane coming down the motorway then yes I would agree but he wasn’t, he was on the slip road behind me. He tried to out accelerate me off the slip road into the space I was changing lane into. Can’t see how that is acceptable.

So, He must have driven over the cross hatchings to get round you?

Sounds like you might have wound him up, why were you in the right hand lane of the slip road? were you overtaking cars in the left lane?

Slip lane has one lane. He didn't run over the cross hatchings becuase it runs alongside the motorway for 50-100 yards. I wasn't winding him up - that I was aware of. I can see I'm going to have to draw a picture

It's more usual for some knobhead to pull a stunt like this than not around here, usually a German repmobile. I now watch my mirros and assertivley position my car so they cant do it if I consider thats the best and safest thing to do. Sometimes I will let them in and then ensure I am in lane 2 once we are all on the motorway occupying the gap they could have pulled into if they had waited their turn. This is childish and less safe, but enjoyable. Yes you still get some mental but we share the planet with lots of twunts so dont let it worry you.

Sounds like you knew he was going and you didn't have the power to find yourself space. Just let him go.

No need for power. There was a HGV doing 55 in front of me. Where was I going to accelerate off into - the back of the HGV? I did let him go. After I joined the motorway. He moved into the middle lane. I was going to let him past and them move out to over take the HGV. That was before he decided to spend the next half a mile running alongside me throwing insults at me.

Well you normally fully expect to let the person in front join the motorway first! I shouldn't worry about the dick, it's probably happened 100 times to others this afternoon. He will meet someone more aggresive than himself soon

If my mental image is correct it sounds like Mr A6 is a grade A nakka.

He had nowhere to go and you had no where to go so best to just sit tight until a gap opens in lane 2.

It sounds like he'd planned on charging for lane 2 before looking and vented his embarrasment on you.

It's not at all clear to me what happened despite having read your OP a few times, but it really sounds like you changed lane in front of the A6 causing him to brake. Therefore, if you could see him approaching why not let him go, or get there first rather than lane changing right in front him when he's going faster?

I get your explanation even if others can't and understand whats gone on.

Sounds like the A6 wanted to as you say swoop off the slip into the outer lane and off into the sunset.Totally fked it up and got stuck in lane 1 alongside you on the slip wanting to join when at one point he was behind you.
He should have yielded and eaten humble pie to back off a little and let you on rather than be an obnoxious tt and block you in,I would have and have done the same thing as you.
