Considering one of them new 1.6T r.s clio's?
Discussion
Hey guys!
I currently have a mitsubishi legnum vr4 which for the uninitiated is a 2.5ltr twin turbo v6 (298bhp at 13psi with 340lb/ft) with the 4wd running gear (and AYC!!) from an evo vi, I also run a 1.3 yaris as a daily but I was strongly considering replacing them both with one of these new 1.6 turbo clio's?
My reason behind it is that in order to minimise wear and tear/fuel bills on the legnum I tend to not drive it a lot an use the yaris for commuting etc.
I thought if I replaced them both with a clio I could enjoy driving a fast car more whilst not having to worry about fuel costs etc.
I am a little concerned though as the clio won't be anything like as fast as my legnum (4.8s 0-60 vs 6.7 for the clio) and the legnum's active yaw controlled 4wd makes it devastatingly quick down a slippery back road. The saving grace for the clio is that it probably won't be long before someone like K-tec have a 250bhp or so upgrade for these and that would help close the perfomance gap (potentially at the expense of mpg!!)
What do we think? The clio is the strongest contender for me in this market as it's an auto (I have a knackered left leg and a foot drop) so a manual is a no go for me! Will I regret getting rid of the legnum or would the clio be enjoyable enough to compensate?
Discuss.
Cheers

The budget is irrelevant tbh as it would be a finance job. I was weighing up the costs of owning 2 cars that need mot's, a combined £350 of road tax, a combined £300 of fuel costs and a combined insurance of £650 vs £180 a month finance, £140(I think??) a year road tax and no mot for 3 years for the clio plus whatever fuel i'd use.
I've not driven one. But there is no way any clio would compare to the legnum in terms of outright grunt, but it would make a hell of a better daily than the yaris. Test drive one and make sure you hit some twisties.
I know it would high on my list if I were in the market for such a car. Prefer the looks of the 197 though.
I should imagine 250bhp would be very fun in somthing that small.

It's more the monthly/annual cost that I am concerned about rather than the value of the car etc. The reason I seldom drive the legnum is when I do I go bonkers in it as its been a while since a drove it and end up going through a ton of shell's finest!
I am trying to weigh up the fact that if I got one of these clios I woulbe able to enjoy it more as it won't cost me as much in petrol.

10,000 miles @30mpg = £2,200
10,000 miles @20mpg = £3,250
Really worth it for sake of 80 a month?
Also at 180 a month that would take nearly 10 years to pay off a 20k car without a deposit...
After 3 years the clio will have lost 12k in value thats about 330 a month in depreciation alone!

I do around 15K a year. It's also the enjoyment factor, I don't get to enjoy my legnum as it costs a lot to run, the clio I could enjoy every day without too much worry?
My "man maths" are sketchy at the best of times so any comments on running costs etc are greatly welcomed! The whole idea may well be bonkers which is why I am asking you lot!!

Please see depreciation comment above your figures seem way out to me. Get the clio on finance and will be pay a lot of money for a car that will be worth f
k all once its paid off...
Dont see how financially it will save you any money at all especially at 15k miles if split 7.5k in each the average mpg between the two would probably be similar to what the clio would achieve anyway!

Fair one, the legnum was the most expensive car I have every bought (it owes me around £5k including the £1100 exhaust!) and never had a car on finance. The end value of the car doesn't mean a lot to me either as if I was to buy a new car on finance I would be keeping it until it was pretty old anyway!

Even though buying a new car would seemingly be more expensive I have no doubt it would still be a lot cheaper than running the legnum as a daily! which brings me to one of my reasons for considering it, I could enjoy driving it every day!
If you want a new car, then just be honest about it and accept the total extra £££ overall costs compared to running the older steed.
The new Clio RS is getting a bit of a bad press for driver involvement and fun. It comes bottom of the pile compared to the Fiesta ST and 208 GTI, so you will now be buying a drop in capability from Renaultsport. I think that will hammer new Clio RS sales and you could end up with a less popular car.
However, if has to be an auto, choice is limited. I would also look elsewhere. The new Clio RS is trying to be a Golf GTI and it will now struggle (french badge), so you could have a look in DSG VW/Audi camp. Also, they have plenty of tuning options and some good used buys to trim costs.

I understand a legnum will be expensive don't see how the clio will save you money especially after 3 years when it is out of warranty and has an untested newly designed turbo engine and dsg box...Even though buying a new car would seemingly be more expensive I have no doubt it would still be a lot cheaper than running the legnum as a daily! which brings me to one of my reasons for considering it, I could enjoy driving it every day!
Sell both your cars for circa 6-7k and then just buy a car like a E46 330ci coupe auto as it should still do near enough 30mpg and be cheaper to run whilst avoiding the mass amount of depreciation you get with a new car.

That's not man maths you're doing, it's woman maths."Car needs £10 spent on wiper blades"
"it's a deathtrap too expensive buy a new car on finance!"
