Hey

A friend of mine had a scary experience a couple of weeks ago.

He has a Porsche Cayenne ( lucky chap ) and on the M4 the other day, he was harassed by a car full of dodgy looking geezers, flashing its lights and making out there was something wrong with his car.

He ignored them and promptly turned off at Heathrow, where they disappeared. He called the BiB and that was that.

I have heard that there are some gangs from Eastern Europe prepared to try and get people to stop, merely to steal the car for parts. A few people on other forums have reported similar goings on recently, including one chap with a GTR who was hassled on the M40.

My friends car has a rear camera set up. Would it be possible to simply connect a hard disk to the camera so that footage can be recorded on a permanent loop, maybe with some software integrated into the dashboard display to review and manage the recording ?

Scary stuff.

TBH with the costs of installing the equiptment and the liklihood of it actually happening I can't see it as being cost efficient tbh, especially if the car is insured.

At the end of the day the motorways are fully monitored by CCTV so if the police were that way inclined evidence could be gained by that means.

In the case of the GTR, I read that the owner simply sped away from the car harassing them and left them standing. In which case, if he got picked up for speeding, the CCTV footage could be used in mitigation maybe?

I have a pair of blackvue cameras connected in the car both front and back
Both full HD so it captures everything clearly including plates, faces etc

They both record on a 32GB stick of memory inside it (each) and is recording 24/7 even when parked. Only time I ever release the stick is if something has happened that warrants it or if it starts to flash when I get in the car after it's parked up suggested an "event" has triggered.

I have also got a portable dvd player (dead dvd but working screen) that I use to view (live ) or I just stick it in the phone or laptop (to view recordings)

Interesting. Ive been looking at a few specialist websites for suppliers well.

How much time is recorded in hours on a loop? Last 24 hrs? Last 72 hrs or whatever?

Don't worry, lots of holier than though middle class types here that find the use of words such as 'geezers' very offensive, ignore him, symptom of PH going to the dogs .....

Good job you didn't have any obvious spelling errors or he would have been all over those like a cheap suit .....

I've got a blackvue in my weekend toy but just about to fit another in the daily thanks to someone hitting it and driving off , the camera would have save me £300-£400 that it will cost to repair the car

I get around 3 days worth give or take. Really depends how "sensitive" the parking mode is. If it is too much, rain drops can set it off which you don't want simply because your battery will be flat before you know it!
I've got it just right that it picks up people walking past the car and obviously cars parking up front/back/side

You can get a battery kit too so that it powers down if it detects the battery running down below x%
Obviously you can turn off the parking mode and only use for driving in which case I would say you could easily get 3-4 maybe 5 days of driving depending on duration

See http://dashcamtalk.com/dash-cam-comparison/

I use the k2000 - not the best but one of smallest and it does the job. Does a continuous loop while the power is on.

The best is probably http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130672647481 for true 1080p and good night-time recording. The seller will also knock off a few dollars if you buy two or more smile

Surely one should be hesitant to keep a recording of ones journeys as sometimes one may have just crept over the speed limit and one really wouldn't want to be prosecuted with ones own recording would one ?!?

Why would you point the camera at the speedo?

speed=distance/time

I have a camera in all the time now and I've caught loads of bad driving and near misses. Knowing my driving is being recorded it calms me down a bit. Depending on the size of the card the footage gets written over with a few days

I've got a front-facing one. It does have a rear attachment camera but it's too much of a faff for me to fit and run a cable.

Lots of people bang on about how they aren't evidential etc, but I just pop it in whilst driving as it could potentially save me a lot of money swinging an insurance claim my way.

Plus, I have now spent an awful lot of money getting my car perfect and wouldn't get it back in the event of a total loss- I want to keep it in one piece!

I do not have one, but having the ability to point it out to someone in an accident may make them think twice about twisting the truth or claiming whiplash for the 5 invisible passengers.

Do you know how much "continious" footage 32GB will hold with your camera? I have been looking into something of this sort for an upcoming trip to France, I have some "cheap" HD cameras that do 1080p and 720p but hold wildy varying amounts of video on a 32GB micro SD. I'm sure it really depends on the compression used by the device, the 1080p I have uses AVI (Great quality but only allows for just under 3 hours) the 720p one I have has an optional rear VGA camera and uses some form of Mpeg (maybe H264?) and reports that a 32GB will hold over 13 hours of 720p (obviously less if used with the VGA rear camera as well).

The batteries in both devices will not last long enough to be "parked" mode, but they are setup so that when power is applied they start recording and stop when power is removed, but 13 hours is still not really enough to do "parked" mode (to my mind at least), I know you say yours has motion detect (I think I can do similar on mine) I'm wondering if the added features yours has are worth the extra money.

My other thought was if someone does a camera that will "upload" footage either "live" or recorded to the internet so that if the car does get stolen or damaged (and the camera nicked?) you still have a record of what happened? In some ways like a mobile phone and Ustream for example....

Just mulling over this I am happy with the cameras I have for "driving footage" mainly for the France trip and things like wings and wheels at Dunsfold etc...

If anyone wants to see the output from my "cheap dual camera" setup I have put some up on my youtube channel (I'll hapilly post links here if asked)

In reply to the OP's original query, the in-car cameras are fine if you have the video, in the situation described if they nick the car with the video card in you have no evidence.

How will having a camera help to keep the car in one piece? confused
