STOLEN - PHers Mk1 Golf GTi
Discussion
Chaps,
I never thought I would be posting a thread like this, but here goes ...
STOLEN - Mk1 Golf GTi, 1800cc, Lhasa Green, Reg MGT543Y, from private driveway in East London sometime between Monday 4th and Friday 8th October.
Unusual circumstances, in that the car was NOT drivable. It lacked a battery and some of the ignition system (which is still inside my flat, along with both sets of keys).
It was mechanically in excellent condition (recent full rebuild), bodywork was average-to-good, known to have one flat tyre.
It was my pride and joy, registered off the road (SORN), although still MOT'd. Sadly, no insurance (as I never thought it would be pinched). Last driven on the road about 1 month ago, declared SORN when the tax ran out.
It displayed a valid parking permit, and parked on a private off-road drive, outside my flat in Bow.
My neighbour over the road can tell me that two blokes with some form of yellow truck bounced the front of it up and down several times, then "Dragged it off down the road". She (sadly) can't remember when this was, but thinks it was early last week, during the daytime (we have just been on holiday for a week, and came back this evening to find the car gone).
This is NOT the usual pistonheads fodder, as it was not a valuable car (a classic, valued at around £2000). However, it was highly prized by me, having been carefully restored over the last 2 years.
If anyone can help professionally - i.e. with contacts or good suggestions for ways to track it down, then I would appreciate any help which you can give. I am offering a cash reward (small, I'm afraid) for information leading to the successful recovery of the car. Failing that, should anyone offer you parts for a Mk1 Golf Gti, 1800, Lhasa Green, please take the details and let me know.
I am very keen to see this car back in one piece. Logically, I know it has probably been crushed, but I would value any assistance. I know it's only metal, and replacable, but I still grieve it's loss.
Oli.

Why didn't the neighbor call the cops when she saw the suspicious activity? Maybe she thought they'd be gone by then. Or, if she had told them to get away, they might have retaliated? I'm really sorry this happened to you. I wonder what they planned to do with an incomplete car, and without the keys?
HiAsAKite,
Thanks. Appreciated.
I should probably add my contact details: golf@deep-green.co.uk, or call me on 07879 820967.
To make things worse, I'm away on business from tomorrow morning for 4 days. Always at the worse possible time!
Thanks again to everyone for reading this. Sharing it has already helped cool my extreme anger! It's not just the fact that it was my pride and joy; the feeling of having been stolen from is difficult, as is the knowledge that it will take a fair chunk of time to sort this out. If it has been taken by a scrappie then someone will know where it is. All (all!) I have
to do is find that someone ...

I posted this site a while back www.twoc.co.uk/ may be worth a shot
My mate had exactly the same thing happened on about the 15th of September.
His show standard MK1 golf GTi was stolen from out the back of his flat near Croydon. It had no engine in it (he had it out rebuilding it) and was left out the back of the garages in a private car park. They must have had a truck or trailer of some sort to be able to take it away.

I'm sorry to hear about this. I really am. Hope something positive comes out of it in some way.
Annoys me. I know how it is to be sentimentally attacthed to something that isn't worth alot in monetary terms. This is going to make me think long and hard about where I keep the "worthless" part of my fleet. I've owned my E21 BMW since 1990-first car I ever bought.
best of luck.

ive put a message onto www.buysellcortina.co.uk asking fellow members to keep their eyes peeled for you mate.
sorry i can't really help much
, but good luck on finding it in one piece.
a friend's brother had his Acura Integra (his pride and joy, btw) stolen from his driveway overnight, while he was in his house sleeping. the police found it but won't give him any details, and won't release it...

Oli,
Whereabouts in East London? I drive up through Bow quite frequently so will keep an eye out.
Who would pinch it? A minter would be difficult to shift one would have thought because it will be bought by an enthusiast who will be able to sniff out a rogue seller fairly easily. For parts? Hardly worth the nother of a low loader...
Have you checked with the council / police? You never know, you might have a busybody neighbour who decided that your "old" car had been dumped as it had been there for a week or so without moving. Get onto them pronto just in case and before they crush it...
All the best with it, keep us up to date...

Hi Oli,
Sorry to hear the news.
I'll keep an eye out, but NCOT's suggestion is most likely:
I know of over a dozen cars (including some exceptionally rare ones), all taken from private property by council workers.

As my mate (G60Renshaw) mentioned, I had exactly the same thing happen to me! I guess it was stolen in the same manner as I have no proof that it was taken in any other way!
It was engineless and without the gearbox.... finding the car itself would be a result but I suspect that it may have been crushed or moved abroad due to the condition (recently renovated) I have been checking the usual e-haunts but nothing yet... I'll try and contact you later dude... see if we can help each other!
I'm about 30mins through traffic, from Bow.
Good luck!
