Hi All,

Looking for a comfy commuter on a budget - recently started a new job which would mean approx 18-20k miles a year.

Have seen the following which from the knowledge soaked up from this forum should generally be fairly reliable. What do you think - teach me!

Passat all day for me. I think that's the PD engine which is renowned for being tough. You'll note the Audi on the same engine has done another 80k. That's a bit leggy for a banger IMO, but the Passat will still have plenty of life left in it if it's been doing motorway miles rather than minicabbing.

You need to buy the opposite way round; any feature (electric windows, seats, sunroof, mirrors) are really just something else to go wrong. Alloy wheels mean expensive tyres.

With doing so many miles, don't skimp on the maintenance even though it'll cost more than the car's worth every six months. - keep to the service schedule and it should last you well.

1st question do you really need a diesel ? they cost more to buy and run, my £200 Skoda Octavia 2.0 estate does 40mpg,the Audi...knackered. Astra...crap engine. Passat ..possibly. Laguna. .no.no.no. the Kia would be my choice it doesn't have the snob value, but it will never break down...

Hi. I certainly do not need a diesel and i am not fussed if i have one or not. What do need is a reliable car not smaller than a focus. Just not a fan of small cars like lupos etc.

Happy to average 40mpg if i can on a mostly motorway commute.

jeez I hate the MK4 Astra. NOTHING appealing about it at all imo.

I think I'd go for the Magentis which seems like insane value for money but I can understand its not for everyone. I'm not even going to click on the Laguna link because, well....why would I?

Personally i'd hunt out a Saab or an OVLOV with aircon and cruise control if I was doing your kind of mileage.

This.

A properly comfy chair, a decent stereo and a nice interior will go a long way to soothing your high(ish) miles. No way would I want to look at a dour Passat dash, or cope with the horrid Astra/Kia interiors.

a couple of year ago i was doing that sort of miles, I done it in a 1998 Celica 1.8 st, not fast, no toys to break but never ever let me down serviced every 3 months myself, £50 a pop for oil and filters and plugs. easy 40mpg all the time. You will get tired of the miles no matter what car you drive. the celica was not ideal, but in reality it's no sports car so far more comfortable than most BMW / AUDI / VW buses with sports (Hard) suspension

From your list the kia would be the one i'd go fro from your list, the others are just high miles junk, fine if you'd had one from 100K and built up those miles but starting off with an unknown quantity from those miles is just not worth the risk in my view.

Rover 75 cdt all day long please, comfortable is the main thing about them & generally very reliable. My auto is doing 52mpg on a long run in the summer, drops to mid 40's in the winter. Heated sofa armchairs, cruise & comfy 15" tyres. Remote diesel heater for cold mornings etc.

I'm off to pickup my "summer is here lets buy an MX5" tonight, the Rover will be going on ebay tomorrow, its been a great car apart from one broken spring & some bulbs.

lol! its so funny you mention this, because these have a great reputation and I have been looking for them but my word they get snapped up so quickly and actually command quite a bit of money for a comparable car!

I would be nervous about buying a high-mileage diesel with limited history at this price point. If I had to pick one from the list, first choice would be the Magentis and second would be the Passat. Last choice would be the Laguna.

Maybe a Japanese petrol saloon would be a better bet. Toyota Avensis or Honda Accord? Decently sized, reasonably economical, and loads about at the 800 - 1000 GBP price point. Generally reliable and cheap/easy to fix.
