Britain's most dangerous job

By Matt Ball
Last updated October 18 2004

And the 'winner' is...

Window cleaning is the most dangerous job in Britain, while being a vicar is one of the safest, according to a new report by Churchill Insurance.

The report found that window cleaners have more chance of being killed or injured than police, firemen or even soldiers.

Churchill spokesman Greg Dawson says: "Window cleaners were top of the pile as they are working at height, on ladders, with one or more implements, and need incredible balance and concentration. They could be described as circus performers without the safety net."

The table below shows the ten riskiest professions. Further down the rankings came jobs such as bailiffs and taxi drivers, followed by beer tasters, housewives and journalists.

Vicars, pharmacists and insurance brokers were rated as having the most sedate and secure professions.

Britain's ten most dangerous professions
1. Window Cleaner 6. Police officer
2. Soldier 7. Roofer
3. Fireman 8. Scaffolder
4. Offshore fisherman 9. Tree surgeon
5. Pilot 10. Circus performer

Anyone on here done or do any of these (apart from BiB, we know we have those...)? - I used to do No. 2.

I know how they feel.

Just the other day I had to arrest some clown who crashed his plane into a tree and had climbed up some scaffolding, onto a roof and was trying to get it out of the branches using a soapy rag.

Nothing about "The man at BT who has to explain that they have cocked up yet again and yes they will definitely be around next time to start / complete / fix your install"???

He's sailing close to the wind, I can tell you...

How do they figure the pilot?
I'm sure F1 driver was one in the top ten.

Once did 2 & 10 combined (briefly).

Actually, no, it was 2 and 5.

Although I sometimes feel as though 6 and 10 are interchangeable...

Most of the 2's that were 6's at the same time certainly did a good impression of a 10.

It tends to differ according to who makes the list.

Missing on that list is workers lorry driving, farming, construction, forestry etc. All have higher injury/fatality rates than some of those jobs.

I am pretty sure that offshore fishing is more risk than the other jobs, but the low employment rate probably makes a difference depending on when/how you count the figures. Oil rig working is also very dangerous, but I think Piper Alpha skewed that figures a bit.

yeah.......i'm a firefighter

i'm surprised that the men who put out the traffic cones on motorways are not up there in the list, i'm sure I read somewhere about the amount of them being killed or seriously injured increasing, makes sense when you think about it

I'd like to nominate BT engineers as well. The Engineer arrive at my parents house, they heard the van coming up the drive. My mum walked out to see the driver come careering up the driveway, skid on the conkers and plough straight into a tree.

He got out, apparently unperturbed by the fact that his van was wrecked, and said:

Morning Madam!

I spoke to some of them on night shift in ASDA when they work on the M25 and they say dosen't happen. Although think its quite common in the US.

I'm surprised Police Officer is in the top 10 to be honest.

I'd have thought any job working at height/underwater/underground/construction etc is more dangerous.

I guess it's worked out percentage wise as number of deaths per 1000 in each occupation or some such way of doing it.

heh, never thought about it that way... I wonder how the occupation of "rock star" would compare, with plane crashes, drug ODs, and such.

I saw a tv programme on this and I they said that it was one of the most dangerous jobs in GB.

I can't get anyone to clean my upstairs windows where I live because of my bay window. The window cleaner who used to do next door's gave up three years ago after falling off his ladder.
