Priceless comments as usual!

You have to be careful when countersteering a quattro that way. The driver reacted to this slide like a woman, not like a 400+hp car driver.

Seems a shame to write the car off. It looks like it just needs a new front wing, two doors and either some new bodywork at the back or some good panel beating. Surely it's largely cosmetic damage? Perhaps replace suspension/uprights on the RHS for good measure, but the rest of it is still ok surely?

I suspect that will have fundamentally damaged the shell, not just panels.

What happened there, didnt look like Audi style handling ?

I think that sounds about right to me. Looks like he tried to correct a small slide (four wheel drift) with too much opposite lock and speared off when it gripped.

They just said they had to write it off and the driver had to pay for the car out of his own pocket of £25k which he did.

He also forgot they had fitted the car with a tracker and there was videos of him taking off the reg plates after he had crashed it.

A lesson to anyone planning on attending a track day without insurance.

He had to pay out over £25k from his own pocket to repair the hire car.

The penny has just dropped, as I didn't quite read the OP correctly - that was a normal road going hire car he was driving on a trackday without insurance. What a plank.

In situations like this why does no-one ever get done for fraud? Surely, this just encourages people to try it on - if you're successful, great you save a fortune, if you're not successful, you're no worse off.

The driver did make the classic mistake for corrections - winding too much lock on, then failing to be able to get it back off again once the car snapped back, but the ridiculous expression of a rational thought was what I was highlighting. smile

When I was at CC in June there was oil on the track (huge slick running all the way to Quarry) at that point and I had to conciously fight the urge to apply too much counter steering with THIS in mind. Luckily it worked and the car slid gracefully and all was well!

This seems to be a handling trait with 4WD cars.. car seems to go into a slight drift, then violently snaps back the other way causing a spin. What causes it out of curiosity? Presumably lack of experience with 4WD and overcorrecting for the slide? (Have barely ever driven anything 4WD so have no experience of their handling, hence me asking!)

In my experience, many cars are capable of going off the road in this manner regardless of which wheels are driven.

Happens all the time at Combe. After every action day, there will be a good few cars towed a few miles down the road and then the insurance or breakdown company called.

I think there is something in this with 4wd cars but agree it can happy with any and is down to a lot of factors, like surface, tyres, setup, weight, driver etc.

I remember seeing a 4wd Sieera ont he start of one of those Police Chase programmes when they first started pitch into a corner and snap vionlently back, I guess anything can bite back.
