I need a stop gap car £4-5k for the next 6 months or so....

I can be as silly our as sensible as I see fit!

So far I have looked at old Boxsters and Z4s at this money. I even took a quick trip on Saturday to look at a TVR wedge but I need it to work when I want not when it wants!

On the silly scale this caught my eye whilst thumbing through a classic car mag over the weekend.

Appreciate this is a wide spectrum but I really fancy something different hence asking for left field suggestions.

My only stipulation is it must have at least 3 months MOT.

Over to you...

That is a cracking start!!!

Probably should add that I would like to be able to fit in it and said vehicle should be able to carry me up hill!! I am a "bit of a unit!"

I disagree. Compared to the OP's offering, your choice is positively sensible hehe

Excellent work, lead me immediately to the 500 SEC underneath which is really interesting...

Pros- It's fast, reliable and looks normal when you want it to be (i think- i have no idea)

Cons- Get mistaken for illegal minicab

I had looked at the Maserati but the mileage terrifies me!

Anything goes wrong and it will be expensive however it is quite a shout...

Quite liking the old CLs.

Please keep the suggestions coming this is really helpful

I used a cheap, slightly tatty 350I Wedge for nearly two years, it was my only car for that time.
Aside from some regular fettling it only ever left me stranded once in about 15,000 miles.

Made a great noise too...

Or how about;

(You can get a 2.8I for under £5k too).

So you are after a comfy barge rather than a fun car?

Currently have a half way house as I have an XKR that is going to fund a business start up.

I suppose its either!

My initial thinking was sports/fun.

We have a new 3 series for sensible motoring...

That TVR is interesting.

Jag XK8 I have done.

I wouldn't fit in the mini!

Just gotta say - there are some truly fantastic cars you have suggested on this thread!

That Merc for £4.5k is stunning value - and that Mini!

I think they're great value and very under-rated.

Had mine since August, use it a fair bit and it's never missed a beat. Get decent mpg out of it, but more importantly it puts a smile on my face every time it starts up and goes. A great sound-track with a reliable Cologne Granada V6, without putting the fear of God in you if you go out in the wet in it.

Rarity is another thing in its favour, haven't seen another on the road since August.

Get a good one, and you won't regret it. smile

3+ RX8s.
That way when one doesn't work you can use one of the others.
A 330CSI if you like rusty front wings and fattiness and ridiculously over priced parts.
Something hot Clio flavoured if you like cheap parts and lots of them.
ITR or CTR. Bini CS.
The old Audi A3 3.2 Quattro, it's an A not an S so it's not chavvy and a bit of a sleeper if the badges fall off and a 1.6 badge falls on.
E36 M3?

Is that all the usual suspects for sensible and reliable PH dailies?

eta:
Alfa GTV V6 or spider? Even one of the fancy ones (Cup?) can be had for not much. It's not that fast but it's a design classic.
Fiat Coupe 5 pot turbo?

Or if you really need some space, S-Type. 4L V8. Even the R is falling under 5k now. Don't think you can get a proper gear box in any of the bigger engined ones though :/
