I don’t take my car to work, but I enjoy driving it on the weekends and going places. I know both drink a lot of fuel and the insurance is high – compared to my lame diesel, however which of two is worth going for?
I'm not the greatest of drivers – but I am improving!
I will probably buy second hand.

Both have similar levels of kit. Probably get a 182 cheaper. I have a 172 and the missus used to have the old 206 GTI (136bhp) and her car was absolutely awful to drive, crap gearbox, crashy rock-hard suspension. Peugeot claim to have sorted this out with the new one but by all accounts the new one is just as sh1te as the old one, just quicker. Your best bet is a test drive of both really. I'd probably stick a fiver on you going for the 182 though.

Clio is the much better handling/performing of the two - and it's bigger inside!

I like the pug's bucket seats, but the clio sport just oozes class.

I probably go for a 172 as 182 are still pretty pricey.

I've organised a test drive with the pug, so the local Renault dealer doesn't have any clio sports in.

The Peugeot is hated by a certain three letter magazine...

182! It's easily worth the extra over the 172 or 172 cup as (with cup extra bits - a must have) it combines the best of them both into a superb package. Plus, residuals are much worse than (I at least) expected so you should be able to get a good year old low miler with sat nav for c£10.5-11k. As soon as I'm able I shall purchase one. It's quicker than an audi S3 and will keep up with even more exotic machinery through the twisties.

There simply isn't any competition in it's class, least of all the Pug.

See Autocar's review of the Fiesta ST this week which Ford benchmarked against the Pug. They also recommend the 182 as being light years ahead of either.

Had a 172 until she went up in flames and now have a Megane 225 but my old man has a 182 and they are awesome peices of kit for the money. Yes the 225 is much quicker but no where near as much fun to drive!

ps.. I test drove the Pug 180 and it does not come close to the Clio's.

pps... just wait until they put the 2 litre turbo engine that is in the Megane into the Clio!!!

I've not heard of any plans for them to do so? Also, they'd have to work pretty hard for it not to destroy the dynamics that make the 182 such a great package - the fine balance is the reason why it's at least as quick in the real world as a clio v6.

From what we have heard the 2006 ClioSport will be a 200bhp 2.0 n/a engine. I think a turbo would change the character of it.

The 206 GTi 180 is one of the worst cars I've driven this year. Genuinely awful driving position, gearbox, sightlines out of the vehicles and the ride/handling compromise is just all wrong. It saddens me to see a coompany with such talent turning out dross like this.

The ride is so bad that when you hit a small pothole or expansion joint, the shock through the passenger cell is so severe that it's as if somebody has crept up behind you and deliberately made you jump out of your skin. Not pleasant.

I also thought Autocar were pretty harsh on the Fiesta ST. I accept that I'm in a minority here, but I found it a more enjoyable car than the Clio 182. No, it's not as quick nor as focused but it's comfortable, good fun to pedal and has a decent spread of torque. Shame about the gearbox though.

I'd love to know where you heard that? I assume that would then be the first Renaultsport version of the new (fugly) Clio?

I have seen discussions about it on Cliosport.net but one of the car mags (Top Gear possibly??) had the artists drawings of the new shape Clio and that it would be fitted with a 200bhp+ n/a engine. Should be quite a package!

182 all the way. It's the business. As said previously it surprises much quicker machinery, and once you hit 5k it suddenly goes mental! Good to drive, lots of fun, and the spec of a car double the price. Make sure you get the cup packs. I'll post pics of mine if you need more convincing!

182 cup. Perhaps the closest yet to the 205Gti I owned many years ago? Took a test "run" in the 182 and although I was quite wary about the power output at first (and never really thrashed it TBO)it was the way it took the turns and the communicative feel from the wheel that took me back...............

no choice.

Cup i'd say - and thats coming from a big pug fan. missus has a non gti 206 and i'm not a fan, too many things a pain in the arse day to day like catching my feet under the day (i'm a size 9 btw) and the fact it dont handle as good. is far nicer inside than the clio though. If you look on autotrader, you'll find clio cups brand new on a 54 plate for 11300 all in. www.motorpoint.co.uk will sell you a normal 182 for 11700 but with out the option to cup spec everything. Been looking at the clio of late.

Go with the Cup. No frills but a lot of bang for the money. I put 30k km on my Ragnotti, an inordinate amount of them around the 'ring, and it never missed a beat. Used no oil and had a couple niggles fised under warranty. I's still have it if the bird hadn't pranged it. I lives on as a Group N rally car.

By the way the upshift light works in 5th gear!

I faced a similar dillema back in '88. Then it was 205GTI vs R5 GT Turbo. Bought the Pug in the end, and retrospectively that definitely was the right choice. Can't help thinking that the Renault would win today, even though I haven't driven either.

It's actually hard to get the full idea of how good the Cliosport is on a test drive, mine's only just got proper loose at 9k miles
