From BBC

I'm actually lost for words that this can happen, how much more of this have we got to take?

Do you think the Police will provide me with a stun gun and handcuffs in case a I see a burglar?

I don't have a problem with this at all. Before anyone starts accusing me of being a lentlist, I live in a small village and am fed up with numpties who pootle through the countryside at an eratic 35 to 45 then completely ignore the change in speed limits as they enter the village. We are also blessed with a cracking stretch of road either side of the village that one of the bike mags has recommended. Quite a few don't bother slowing down much when they get to the village.

Drive quickly when appropriate (I don't allways take too much notice of the speed limits if the conditions are right) but FFS it is never appropriate in a restricted residential area.

There abouts, very nice apart from the numpties and bikers who think that if there wheels are on the correct side of the road then they are in the right. At least one of them has lost an arguement with someones A column.

If you stick to your own side of the road on that stretch, you're not doing it right. There are places to go obscenely quick and places to slow down. TBH, I always slow down in the villages as I need a rest from the exertion if I'm on the bike and it's just so picturesque

I'm with these chaps. It's not like the speeders get sanctioned and, let's face it, breaking the speed limit through a village is unnecessary and idiotic, and residents can normally do b*gger all about it.

If you get a warning letter but no fine or points then it's seems perfectly in proportion to me. Hopefully this will be the start of the police differentiating between 'fast' and 'dangerous' driving once and for all.

But it's in Brainstorm's patch, so it wouldn't be...

but at what point do these volunteers become "deputies" or even special constables and the letters are for 3 points?

seems like cheap recruiting if you ask me.

I don't think it is that unreasonable.

30mph restrictions on the nice straight'ish road that runs through our village are widely ignored. Wycombe council won't do anything about it until someone is killed so they recommend that we park our cars on the road to narrow it. I have a nightmare ferrying three kids over the road to go to school which is 30ft from my front door.

Most nights between midnight and about 3am we get a series of complete fking morons who drive up the road at way over the national speed limit let alone 30mph. Once every 6 months there is a serious accident the most recent involved someone driving into a very sturdy tree at quite high speed.

Until selfish moronic drivers start driving nearer the speed limits in built up areas the government / police will continue to bombard us all with these measures.

B4 I get branded as a lentilist of the highest order, I do drive carefully through residential areas but like a loony the rest of the time. I used to do track days in my Company Car (never got round to mentioning it to the boss though) to blow off some pent up frustration .

Just my tuppence worth

This is exactly my point.
I have no issues with speeding motorists being fined or having points on the license at all. The issue I have is that the general public are being given the equipment to monitor it. A bit more of our road tax/Petrol tax/scamera fines actually being passed on the the police to allow more traffic police out there to do this work would be great.
Instead I think this could be the thin end of the wedge, tinman rightly points out, the friendly warnings will soon come with a direct debit form and a pre-paid envelope to the DVLA.

How many speed cameras have caught un-insured, un-taxed or stolen cars I wonder?

I think more to the point would be: how much police time would you have to waste to identify numpty countryside driving as described by Ripton

I agree that's it's not even close to the ideal solution, but OTOH speeding through country villages is hardly a top police priority and it's bloody annoying if you live there

This would be my only concern - Police training these volunteers and giving them special powers.

Is it only me who finds this amazing! How on earth a council can recommend this sort of action is beyond me!

What we need is *more* visibility on the road, not less. Astounding.

But I agree with the general consensus here - amazing how many people have a 'default' speed and only adjust that when they come upon traffic lights or roundabouts. This is the same logic they use in the middle lane on motorways ..

IME its the dozy locals they catch out most. Time and time again I've recognised local School-run mums/non-Petrolheads cruising through our (30mph) village at a gentle 45-50mph. None of them would claim to be anything other than a 'careful' driver, and would be the first to ask for a camera if the council let them.

What do you do?

I agree, I seem to remember that when these traps are set, it's mostly "locals" that get done.

Totally agree with this quote.
I live in a small village opposite a primary school and have noticed the amount of local numpties too bl**dy lazy to walk their brats when most only live round the corner. Its a narrow road but they still insist on flying along at 40+ mph to drop off/pick up the lazy little oiks and then parking across our drives.
More noticeably lately is the amount of scummy P155y little Chavs that think its cool to race up and down this road with total disregard for anyone.
We have also been approached by the police to participate in locals being trained to use handheld speed guns and take down reg numbers etc, something I did consider doing but did'nt want some snotty chav taking it out on the Yellow One as I'm sure word would eventually get round as to who was passing on this info.
