Now I enjoy a fast car as much as the next person on here but that isn't my point.
My point is stupid exhaust noises.
I'm not only on about chavs with their cherry bomb special I mean all cars with loud exhausts that aren't 700bhp super cars or classic cars.
What is the point in having your car fitted with a large and loud exhaust?
It will annoy you on a long journey and when you're driving around town you'll look like a cock, in-fact there isn't much more cockish than seeing a young guy wearing a vest driving something vtec and flooring it everywhere in traffic with his crappy look at me exhaust. Yes when you have a big exhaust everyone will look at you but they are not thinking wow look at that person, he's pretty cool...
Now for those times when you go out on a hoon you might feel like a racing driver whilst your car goes vroom vroom but you don't hoon all day and everyday so I just don't see the point in a loud exhaust.
Obviously as mentioned when a car can't help but be loud that is fine, my old Mini was rather loud for a little car and my friend's dad old TVR was the same. It is just when people change their standard exhaust for a fart cannon. That bothers me.

I changed the exhaust on my 106 Gti for something louder. A 2" Outward rolled s/s Pugsport, with a decat and no silencer.
It was relatively civilised below 4k rpm and above that it sounded raspy and brilliant, it even popped and flamed on gearchange
It made the car sound infinitely better, made the car a bit quicker and was not chavvy at all, and the tip suited the car better too

I don't judge on noise, just on behaviour (although recently I've notice that my judgements are seeming to have very little effect on those I'm judging ) - the boy racer in a town centre that you mention, or a mid-late 20s driver insisting on darting the 5m from where he'd come to stop on the petrol forecourt up to the petrol pump just as fast and loud as he could.
On an I4 I think exhaust choice is quite sensitive - a farting sound is not appreciated, it needs to have certain raspy quality (not easy to explain in text, I know what I mean). Non-I4s, I find most sound nice with a bit of aural augmentation.

we would all like sports cars for their speed and noise
i do agree that some put on ridiculous loud exhuasts on slow cars, but not everyone can afford a fast car per say.
gains can be made with less back pressure from the exhuast and so with no silencers, which will cause the increased noise.
it's like anything in cars, it's a personal matter, be it, engine, colour, mods etc.

Infact by your logic cars like Nissan GTR, Porsche GT3 RS, C63 AMG, RS6, Lotuses etc fall short of your "700bhp".
I agree that a loud exhaust looks stupid on an underpowered car, but if a car goes quick I don't see the harm.
With regards to you asking what the point is in fitting an exhaust, then I think the reasons differ between certain types of people, those that have an underpowered car and just want the noise, and those with high performance cars that actually get exhausts for an increase in power.
I have a turbo back exhaust with no silencers and sports cat and it is loud, but my car is extremely quick, so I don't personally think I look stupid as when I put my foot down the car moves as fast as it sounds. My reasons for the exhaust were for power gains, and the exhaust gained 15bhp (after being mapped in, along with obviously bigger turbo, bigger injectors, larger intercooler etc)
Ultimately as well a 1litre with a small backbox will sound loud and crap, an exhaust system on a v8 will sound lovely.

Very much this. A great exhuast note, when you want it, very much enhances the whole experience of driving. I couldn't care less what anyone else thinks.Most people think their car sounds great when they've modified it. Most people outside their model specific forums and car clubs will think it sounds st, either because it's not necessary for that type of car, it already sounded good and probably isn't any more powerful or it's a car not worth tuning up.

Fair enough, but I assume (bhp aside) you wouldn't mind a Lamborghini driving past with an aftermarket exhaust that was loud, but might think someone with say a heavily tuned Leon Cupra - R with aftermarket exhaust looked stupid?I think loud exhausts look stupid on slow cars, typically people in underpowered hatchbacks, although I done the exact same thing when I was young. It's only now that I look back and think how stupid I must have looked.
I remember I had a Peugeot 206 1.1 "look". I had it lowered, body work smoothed (i.e no door handles etc) and a loud powerflow exhaust, and K&N induction kit, I thought it was great at the time
Now though if I could go back I'd have left it stock and saved the money I spent on it towards a better car (I spent thousands modifying it), or to cover the insurance. I don't think it makes sense to get a slow car and spends thousands modifying, when you could buy a faster car and spend the money you'd have spent modifying it, on paying the extra insurance premiums.

A typical "cheap2 custom exhaust, the type mostly found on peoples cars that just want the noise, or that believe a massive cone filter adds 20bhp are just obscenely loud, boomy and they drone immensely.
I could not tolerate that at all, especially on the motorway as I do a long commute and the constant drone would drive me nuts. But a good quality exhaust is much easier to live with in my opinion.
I'm with you on this one, unless it's a proper supercar, muscle car etc that makes noise for good reason I'd rather my car was quiet and fast. I'm sure it's an age thing but my RS6 is 700bhp and pretty quiet with a standard exhaust. Conversely when I was younger and 22 with a brand new R33 GTR I had a very loud exhaust, Trust downpipes, mines exhaust with no cat's. I'm sure some of this is an age thing, I like my car being stealth but I still can't help myself fizzing (as James May would say" when I hear a C63 AMG!
