We made a website for an 'auto detailing' guy recently and today I decided to let him loose on my car. I was pretty cynical at the thought of spending a few hundred pounds getting my car valeted, but having seen some pretty amazing 'before' and 'after' pics, and having let my car get into rather a sorry state, I thought I'd see if he lived up to the hype!

He came to my office car park in an immaculate Mercedes van, with a mind boggling array of stuff in the back (and most impressively, it's own water tank) and told me that he'd see me in 6 hours!

My curiosity got the better of me a few times and I nipped down to 'offer him a drink' - I am pleased that I did as I saw someone treating my car better than I ever have! Seeing some of the panels under special lighting showed quite spectacular swirl marks in the laquer, apparantley usually caused by overzealous and careless valeting.

Here is a pic of the poor car before treatment started:

Here is a pic of a panel mid process:

The middle section has been 'de swirled' (my own technical term!!) and the top and bottom are untouched.

And here is a pic of the beast after 6 hours of TLC

Rest of the pics are here:

All I can say is Wow!

The car is 8 years old and has covered 60,000 miles, yet now looks markedly better than most of the new cars I have seen. I was going to get the wheels refurbed as I couldn't get them clean but they now look almost perfect. Driving home from the office after dark netted more looks from other motorists and pedestrians then ever before - the car almost looks wet it is so shiny!!

I am genuinley not trying to 'big up' a client of mine, but just wanted to give credit where credit is due - I can honestly say I will never let myself loose near a car again, apart from to give this a quick rinse, as today's evidence suggests that I would do more harm than good!!

www.miracledetail.co.uk is the website (keep your eyes peeled for some banners on here too soon!) - deffo worth a look if you are in the south-east and want to see just how good your car can look!

Looks amazing - but way beyond my budget! Could easily spend what the car's worth in a year, and I bet he couldn't get all the swirls and scratches out of my 15 year old paintwork!!

BTW, don't mean to be a smart arse but this always really annoys me - the phone number on the web page is 0208-660, it should be 020-8660

Cheers guys - he just sent me some before and after swirl mark pics which show a little clearer what he did.

Before

After - this is before any zymol went on

Yesterdays treatment is part of a long term plan to get the car immaculate again - think it would usually cost £300 or so, but there is still some work to do, so the end result will be about £500.

The car should be VERY easy to keep clean now too, as any water that goes near it seems to just jump off!

Purely out of interest, how much of the effect is attributable to the guy doing it (skill and experience) and how much to the materials he was using?

I.e. If you could get hold of the polishes and whatnot, and spent 8+ hours on it yourself, would you get as good a result?

Indeed looks fantastic, £300 is a lot of dosh but then again it looks like it's just been sprayed.

BTW - having been around since before the 01 for London days I find 0207 and 0208 for inner and outer London much easier to read than adding the 8 or 7 on the 3 x digit area code. Rich...

I can back up this guys work. He does an amazing job!!!
This reminds me, She could do with another layer

The results are 90% down to Paul at Miracle I would say. I gave it a go and it took him a day to get the swirl marks out that I had somehow put in.

Here are some pics of the last time she was "miracled"

notice the tent to stop pollen falling on the car and the wheels off for proper detailing

Use [ ] instead of ( ) around the pic bit

It is most certainly massively down to the skill involved - Paul can spot inperfections in paintwork from 20 feet away!

I don't know about you guys, but the thought of treating a car for 6 hours solid would be my idea of hell, but he seems to treat it like a baby and genuinely loves what he does.

I have purchased items from these guys

www.griotsgarage.com/index.jsp

Very complete offering of stuff. It is possible with the correct buffing heads on an electric polisher, along with the proper polishes, for a novice to do some very good work.

Why make it hard on yourself and do it by hand? I can wash, dry, clay, polish and put on three coats of wax in an afternoon on a car the size of that Jag, with power tools. And I don't think I am that fast.

Off topic, but....

In the old days, if you were in London already you could omit the area code, so just 660 1111, with no 01 or 081 or 0181.

If you dial 660 1111 (for example) within London now then it won't work. The area code is 020, not 0208 or 0207, so you would have to dial 8660 1111.

It seems to be a common misconception - it's not just an anal thing about number grouping, it's like it for a reason!

I usually take about 16 hours total on the Esprit to prepare for a show:

by the way - yes - those are alloys and not chrome
