Seeing as the estate car seems to be a dying product thanks to it being gradually edged out by the oversized SUVs, as the title says - what cars are/were best rendered by their manufacturers* as an estate version, and which were horrid?

(*Means no shooting brake coachwork specials, so anyone posting the Lynx Eventer or that horrid DB5 thing or similar gets a red card!)

Here's my starters for 10...

Audi A6' the B7? My mate has a 53 plate RS 6 of the model I'm on about.

Hideous thing as a saloon.

Good shout. Keep 'em coming.

The field is open as even ugly cars that looked best as estates, and great looking cars ruined by having a lardy squareback count!

Any Audi RS looks so much better as an Avant.

I was thinking of the 400 series estate. I'm very surprised and pleased that a Rover has been mentioned, let alone in the first post.

MK 2 Laguna Tourer was a fine looking car. Nearly bought one, lucky escape. Now appear to be extinct.

I might call you on that one as while the hatch was quite pretty the saloon was a minger too..

On second thoughts, the estate edges it.

Always thought that the E60/61 5-Series looked far better as an estate. Especially the M5 variant.

Agree totally on the Audi RS models!
However, like others have posted, my initial thought when I read the title was the Jag XF!

Volvo 850 T5R. I think it was the early years it done in touring cars, before it was outlawed, which cemented it for me.

Mind you the older 245glt & 145 etc I prefer in estate version.

Not sure which category this falls under!

(I do have a soft spot for it tho, as my mum had one when we were little)

..and in a similar vein (upturn into C pillar):
