Interesting 4x4 estate?
Discussion
After many happy years together my faithful 175,000-mile Legacy is literally falling to pieces around me, and I fear a change must be imminent. I literally cannot believe that there is a better car in the entire world than mine, but instead of just buying another one exactly the same I think I might be brave and try something else.
Suggest away:
Budget: £9000
Estate, because I use the space.
Petrol, because I like petrol.
Preferably ~35mpg, because I'm not made of money but all the places I need to go often to are miles away.
Four wheel drive, because I just like having it alright.
Something interesting, because once I put on a sensible hat and bought a sensible estate - and it was awful and tedious and I could. Not. Sell. It. Fast. Enough. I don't need quick, but I do like nippy, and I do want interesting.
No SUVs, because I don't want to go off road so don't want/need one. I like estates, so want one of those. I doesn't need to be massively capacious, but a minimum of 400 litres seats-up would be lovely.
Bang! Go.

Leave all the Foresters alone! They're mine!
That being said, you'll get almost any SG5 Forester STI that comes up, a very nice SG9 XT or a later one with a weirdy rubber band gearbox.
Your query is almost the same as my recent quandary. Although I was also after nice and fast.
Edit: probably none of the Turbo ones if you're after 35mpg, they seem to struggle to do that stuff.

Another legacy or a forester as suggested.
Only other interesting one I can think of is an a4 Quattro with the 1.8T in it? Think they did an Octavia with that engine and the haldex, too?!
I have the Audi Quattro 18T nice with leather anda few bells and whistles, but the Octavia would be cheaper on parts.Only other interesting one I can think of is an a4 Quattro with the 1.8T in it? Think they did an Octavia with that engine and the haldex, too?!

I don't think I can cope with the pain at the pumps.jamesh764 said:
Alfa 159 Q4
I love them! But again with the evil consumption, and sadly there are literally none of them about.pad58 said:

I had one too, years ago. A 1.8t Sport Quattro which was fab, but again probably too thirsty for inclusion in these eco-terrified times. And they hold their money waaaay more than they should.I think you'll be buying another Subaru but here's a different opion.

The Legacy 2.5 isn't much better on fuel.

I keep coming back to Subaru too, particularly Liberty/Legacy though this one will be my last as they don't do anything bigger that's any fun at all. I really can't think of anything other than a Lib or Forester that'll do what you want.
2.0 single turbo means 241bhp, and has just taken the mob (2 adults, 3 small kids, lots of kit and caboodle) on a 4-day 1000km road trip, that managed to include a couple of sightseeing laps at Mount Panorama, and average 33mpg. No hanging around either. OK, so short trips its not quite as economical. Its up for sale later this year, go on, you know you want too...

I had a similar brief for my wife's car and looked at Subarus but hated the plastic interiors so bought an Audi Allroad 2.7 V6 twin turbo (petrol, manual) which is great in every way. Question I have now Is what to replace it with as its getting on a bit so have been looking at the 4motion Passats, 4x4 Skoda Estates, and of course the Audi Avants.
