Can I use any loft insulation or only a certain type for silencing in my exhaust?

Is it sufficient to test it using just a match for a combustability test?

I don't know, but exhaust packing material is cheap anyway...

You're supposed to use proper exhaust material called Basalt silencer wadding. You can get it here:

www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/catalogue/exhausts.htm

However, I know of a Tiger owner who attends trackdays and uses loft insulation to quieten his noise down. Hasn't caught fire yet, although his wife is wondering why their heating bill has gone up this year

I'll get the blow torch out tonight and let you all know tomorrow.

I'll remove it from the loft first ....just in case

I tried it, and it lasts only for a few hours.
Then it all melts into small glass pebbles.

See, that glass thermal rating is not very high, it melts...

You have to go for the proper stuff, I'm afraid.

Glass fibre quilt will melt but if you use Rockwool it shouldn't*

Sounds correct... www.rockwool.com/sw5129.asp
You can even get a video
"Rockwool stone wool withstands more than 1000°C
The major difference between stone wool and other types of insulation materials is that Rockwool stone wool withstands temperatures of more than 1000°C. Glass wool insulation will melt at a lower temperature (600°C). Most foamed plastics will decompose, burn and/or disappear at temperatures below 300°C. Rockwool insulated constructions will thus have a higher fire resistance than constructions insulated with any of the other materials. This can provide vital extra time for people to escape the fire, and for fire fighters to extinguish the fire - before the building becomes completely engulfed in flames and collapses.

To order a video with a fire resistance demonstration of Rockwool stone wool and glass wool, click here."

only for a short while, the fibres are shorter in the loft insulation and it will blow out the end of the exhaust. I tried it with a Yamaha IT465 and it would only last a few hours at most.

Brillo pads work although you would need an awful lot to stuff a silencer. I used a couple in a straight through 2" exhaust just to take the raspiness out of the exhaust note.

Make sure you don't use the ones with soap on them or you might drive down the road blowing bubbles!

Only if you're running a steam engine.

I take it your original idea wasn't a huge success...

One Tiger Owner I know uses Loft insulation in his repack exhaust on his Tiger Cat and has no problems with sound tests on trackdays. usually quieter than my Merlin Motorsport exhaust packing I use.
