BMW 635 CSI hillclimb: Time For Tea?

The 340i represents the newest straight-six BMW, so here's a celebration of days gone by

Please say others search for '635 CSI' in YouTube to make Friday go a bit faster? If you don't already then you probably should going off this video.

It's one of those nutty European hill climbs, the ones that snake their way up spectacular mountains and through verdant forests at obscene speeds. To help matters sections of the climb are wet. Really wet. But that doesn't deter our 635 CSI driver Jurg Durig Gurnigel. It's a superb display of car control, right up to and including the huge moment at 3:00. The noise is fabulous, the car looks brilliant and the speed is exhilarating. Put the kettle on and enjoy!

Watch it here.

Just after that it looks like he's caught up with the previous car? A single seater!

Could the car that's about to follow it be a Lambo Jalpa? Always a slightly oddball dream car of mine.

I'd like to think my ageing and rather tired 33 year old 635CSi has a soul and dreams of being that very car smile

He lost concentration for just an instant as he went to turn the wipers on! Didn't have much room left after he'd gathered it up. Bending such a gorgeous car what have been a tragedy.
So sad to see how boring and bland BMWs have become these days in comparison to this.

The European Course de Cote/Bergrennen? scene is just packed-to-the-gills with AMAZING metal - there's tonnes of material on Youtube, everything from Touring Classics though Group B rally cars to more modern Touring Cars, bespoke hillclimbers - some crazy stuff - but none of them seem to have working clutches or much faith in 1st gear (motability scooters will take them off-the-line!) smile

Committed or what!

That save at 3.00 mins in is some pretty good reflexes.

Just so many great drivers out there, too bad I'm not one of them!

BTW: The driver is called "Jürg Dürig". "Gurnigel" is the name of the hill he's climbing. It's located south of Berne in Switzerland.

Looks a nice example, but is not an 'M' model and appears to have been an import sometime in 1991. Reg plate is correct for year of build though smile

Great stuff, there just isn't a sound like a competition straight six.

This is what that very same engine can become with some modified internals and a 24V head - best sounding BMW ever made in my opinion...
