I have just been to look at a car, it is just over 12 months old and very low mileage the owner mentioned that he had been living in Germany.

Is there any possible implications regarding tax on this car if say he had purchased it through an armed forces scheme then brought it back to the UK, would hpi check reveal all?

All advice welcomed cheers.

I bought a few cars tax free in Germany whilst serving over there.

There is a minimum period that the car has to be out of the UK before it can be sold without being levied for tax (it used to be 6 months but was later increased to 12 months, I've been out for almost 5 years so it could have changed again).

So long as has now been properly registered with DVLA (It will have been on the BFG system over there) you'll have no problems. It could've been originally supplied by a UK dealer prior to export (check the pdi stamp in the service book).

Some of the cars available to the guys over there have huge discounts on them (I bought an E-Class with around 35% off in 2005) so don't be afraid to haggle.

The car could have been registered new in the UK and paid VAT then he drove the car to Germany for a length of time and then just came back to the UK and sold the car.

If the car was bought new in the UK for export to Germany he would not have to pay VAT and if he kept the car for not sure if it is 6 months or 12 months then when he came back to the UK would not have to pay VAT as it is now classed as a used car.

I would think at the end of the day if the car has a UK V5 then I would think everything would be OK although it may be a good idea to ring the DVLA and HMRC.

In 2008 I bought a Ford S-max that was 18 months old in a private sale from the father of the owner who was an Army officer in Germany.I do not know if the car was registered in the UK and VAT paid when he bought the car or if it was bought for export. The paperwork we had with the car was a 12 month service at a German Ford dealer,a DVLA v948 number plate authorisation certificate saying put this number on the car dated a few weeks before we bought the car and a normal V5 registration document with a UK registration number that was on the certificate.

We still have the car and no problems regarding tax,MOT,insurance etc.
