And this collection is housed in Kobe?

Hmm. I wonder how he gets insurance?

Lots of these pics on Ferrarichat.com

Cant remember the guys name but he opens the collection up to the Ferrari Owners club once a year.

There is another Japanese guy called Matsuda who has an even bigger collection.

Am I right in thinking there are only two of these ?
They were based on the 288GTO, but stopped production and started on the F40 ?

there's 5 or 6 IIRC. 5 I think.

They were a development "mule" for the F40 amongst other things.

The guys called Shin Okamoto I believe.

Aha!

That's where all the pretty cars went to. Having two of any of those just makes you greedy, IMO!

I have to say I can't understand why someone would buy those and never use them.

Quite. It's not the '80s any more, the value won't go up dramatically, and unused, they're worth nothing.

That's what always gets me about replicas. People say how dare people make replica Lamborghinis, Ferraris and so on, but at least they're usable, and the values of these cars have been pushed up so far they're too expensive to use to the point where they're just ornaments, or currency.

a lot of you said:

Why aren't they used???

Because Japan has incredibly tough bi-yearly 'MOT's- ever noticed how imports over here are roughly the same age depending on which model it is ie:

J-K Preludes
L-N MR2's
M-P FTO's

Not many JDM cars are kept on, and when they reach a certain age for each model, they are exported. (Supra's, Skylines and NSX's appear to be any age before leaving Japan).

Those cars in his museum are almost certainly not legal to be used on the japanese roads, although can be towed to tracks iirc.

Hi Gaz,

You are right about the MOT/Smog issue. The standards in Japan are so tight that at about 30k miles, you have to either scrap your car OR re-build/install a NEW engine to keep your car legal!!!
Which explains the availability of really nice cars like TT MR2's and hot Supras, right?

I've got a 30k 3.2L motor sitting in my garage for my kids 90's Legend. Problem is, he only has about 125k miles, and those things will go for 250k easy.... Could be storing it for a bit longer.

Hope things are well with you.

Dread to think!

£60-£70k at the moment.

Shelby modified some for racing too.

Funny thing is, all it amounts to is a rebodied Lotus Elan with a bespoke engine. Then again, I suppose that makes sense - take the best chassis around, fit a hi-tech engine (2-litre straight-six), employ Albrecht Goertz to do the styling (he did the BMW 507 and the Datsun 240Z) and you've got a beautiful, exclusive sports car.

So yes, something that elegant came from Japan in the '60s, but the styling was from Germany, the chassis was from England, most were sold in the USA and tuned by Carroll Shelby.

I'm not bad Dave, back on nights, so throwing up a lot, but should settle after a few weeks.

Roads are dead slippery today, so spent a lot of time going sideways! Supra's a bit easier to control than the MR2 though (touches wood), although will wheelspin just off idle with the TCS ON from T-junctions!

Gaz,

I know (part of) your pain! Many years ago, I worked in a photo lab, from 5PM to 2AM (or later) doing prints. Thoroughly disgusting hours to work. Get home about 4, eat a bit, go to sleep. Then the phone rings.
And rings again.
And again. "Oh, I thought you would be up by NOW!"
Like 11AM is so late???

Did not have to flip-flop but twice. Very bad, both times.

Best,

Dave

the F50GT is one of only three built and the 333SP (albeit a Dallara badged as a Ferrari!) is one of the nicest looking sportscars ever...
