Ok so this is starting to really get on my nerves now!! Thought I’d share it with you lot on the chance you might be able to offer some advice.

At the end of my drive slightly off to the right (so I can still get onto my drive) at the foot of my garden, a Saab 9000 has been dumped for about 3 weeks now and it is driving me nuts!!

It’s parked in such a way (half on the pavement and half on the road) that I cannot see past it when I reverse off my drive, which has resulted in a few near misses over the past weeks. And yes I know I am not supposed to reverse into the road but if I don’t the car grounds out.

It also means then whenever I move the cars around off the drive and out of the garage I have to go and park them up on the main road and walk back down to get the next one, only a small annoyance I know but after a while it really gets on your nerves, especially as it means you can’t simply leave them all running.

Anyway the tax ran out at the end of Feb so I reported it to the police who said all they can do is refer it to the council, they in turn have said they will send a letter notifying the owner that unless they re-tax it it will be removed…….in 1 month!!!

What the police would say is that it is locally owned. However none of the neighbours know anything about it, they all thought it was ours and most of the are pretty annoyed with it, as it is getting in their way as well.

A less law-abiding neighbour is now contemplating breaking into it and towing it up on to the main road and parking it there where it would not be in anyone’s way.

Now I am not condoning breaking into anyone’s car but this thing really looks like it has been dumped, the front wing has a recent dent in it and the indicator lens is all smashed up and the cover over the towing eye is down, indicating it was towed into place. Problem is it is an auto and I don’t actually think there is anyway to move it short of a legal ‘council’ removal with a hoist.

Also I am a bit weary of the council / police sticking a big sign on it (which they said they said they will do), for fear of attracting any local vandals given the proximity to my drive and therefore the wife’s car.

Any ideas what I can do about this or am I just going to have to put up with it?

Cheers

Matt

PS. Alternatively anyone know of anyone in Southampton who wants a nice Saab 9000 with leather, I guarantee all the neighbours will look the other way while you pinch it!!

Wear some gloves and force the window down or screwdriver out the lock then move it.

You'll probably find the cars already open if its been dumped mate, try all the doors.

Then move it yourself. Thats what we did in similar circumstances

1. break window
2. Add oily rag
3. ring fire service and report a potential fire hazard.

I'm sure that they'll move the car a little quicker than 1 month in those circumstances

this is of course illegal, and should never be attempted or condoned

Problem is it is an auto, does that not mean the rear axle will be locked into place unless you have the key?

just ring the DVLA hotline for untaxed cars and they'll clamp it then tow it in two days then crush it within the week. job done

Question is do Saab's have a unlocking point on the gearbox for towing. I know on a Jaguar XJ there is a slot next to the selector into which you put a star shaped tool (allen key type) to "unlock" the box.

Any Saab auto owners out there??

why don't you just use a decent size 4x4 and drag it down the road with the wheels locked up?

done same myself - waste of time expecting council/police to do anything about it, i'm afraid!

Well just called the DVLA and they can’t do anything until it has not had tax on it for 14 days (despite the fact it has not moved for over 3 weeks), they also say that they know the council and they will not do a thing for 30 days (minimum).

Would love to tow it down the road but I’d just be shifting the problem. My garage and drive back onto a small road that is a dead at one end (bottom of the hill) and at the top joins the main road. If I drag it to the bottom of the hill I’ll just pi$$ off all the neighbours down there as there is even less room down there.

Any Saab owners know if the gearbox can be released?

we had this happen in a private space in the road where my last apartment was. It looked horrendous this old sierra with an engine sticking out of the boot. It had been there for nearly 18 months and made the road look like a junk yard. Phone calls to the council got responded by telling us it was a private road and not in the way of anyone. Funnily enough, within a few days the car was blocking the middle of the commuter road just 50 yards away and was crushed pronto. No idea how that happened...

I have a Saab and you have to put it in reverse to get the keys out (gearbox lock).I was told this is the same on all Saabs so it sounds like this one is stuck in reverse.Try the saab forum on here there are plenty of 9000 owners and experts on there. good luck

I like that, if only I could move the damn thing that might just happen to this as well.

I'll try the Saab forum and see if they can suggest how to move it.

Just what I was thinking. A "proper" 4x4 would do this no problem.

Well I can only drag it up the road and I don't know anyone with a decent 4x4 well thats a lie I know someone with a brand new Jeep Cherokee 2.8 CRD Limited but he only picked it up yesterday and I am not sure he would be that willing to subject his new baby to such a strain. Does not stop me asking though.

You don't have to move it far... just enough that it is blocking the road completely and preventing access. It'll get shifted pronto then...

I've had 2 incidents.

A came out of my house one morning to find that an idiot had parked across my drive. I called the police and they confirmed it wasn't local and I said I needed it moved so I could get to work. They said that they would only take action after so many days and then a further period after contacting him which amounted to approx 5 weeks. I complained that I needed to leave for work right away and if they couldn't do anything then I'd move it myself. So, out I went hammer in hand and the owner turned up!

The other time, a car was parked across part of my neighbours drive and in an area with restricted parking for 5 months, it had valid tax but flat tyres and hadn't moved once, so we couldn't have it towed. It suddenly lost it's side window one evening and the tax disc was stolen by some scrote shortly after and we were then able to get rid of it and have it crushed!
