Where can I go?
Discussion
Does anyone know of a dis-used airfield or large open space that I could take my new toy to test her out a bit. I can't wait for a trackday, and don't really want to track it but need to gat a feel for it in a safe place.
I am having trouble putting the power down and am too nervous to press too hard on the throttle on open roads as the back end keeps twitching.
I want to go somewhere that I can play for an hour and not hit anything when the rear goes sideways.
I live in Cambridge.

Get hold of 1st Lotus (Andrew Walsh) as he uses North Weald for his courses. He does handling and driving courses which is great for people who want to "lose" it safely and legally (no helmets hence its a driver training day and NOT airfield day)
Maybe you can jump onto one of his days and learn something also as well as hoon around a wide expanse of tarmac and a autocross course he makes (end of day and it combines elements learnt thruout the day)

Most (if not all) disused airfields have been returned to private ownership. So, to drive on the runways or taxiways (ot what's left of them) you would need to obtain permission from the landowner. Most would be reluctant to allow anyone to lark about on their property anyway - they could get into trouble with the local planning body not to mention the neighbours.
The best way to get to know your car is to book with a recognised "airfield day" event organiser. I would highly recommend Motorsports Events who run most of their days at semi-retired airfields (some still in MOD ownership) such as Hullavington, Keevil, Brintingthorpe etc.

Took me a moment to spot the airfield - thought you were talking about the bloody long straight road

I have been to eye airfield, its deserted and no trouble kicking up some dust, its looking a bit rough now though and un seen rocks etc can cause expensive repairs. If you travel that far come a little further to Woodbridge, and Bent-waters many meetings over the summer. I'll think of the link soon but you can google it i'm sure.
Still maintained as a spare shuttle landing strip i believe, but smooth and 2 miles long anyway only hazards are sheep/rabbits. Good for 186 on the R1.
Often used by TGear Evo etc.
