I fear he's off on one about the G word again. I can't think of a more boring way to spend a day ... oh OK maybe two:

- A day without Pistonheads up in the background while at work
- Fishing

Going into it I thought we would get royally stuffed, but it was damm good to see us play above ourselves and beat the yanks. Thank you to the US team though for leaving Tiger till the last pairing, he couldn't get into the game and we ended up winning it before he could make a difference.

Ted, how about a Pistonheads golf umbrella?

Scruff - took your time to get a 'G' thread going under the circumstances!

Great to see, went some way to making up for Brookline in 99.

Thought Curtis Strange in particular and the US team were very gracious in defeat. Can't be easy as the losing captain to give a speech like he did.

The US golf/sports press have already started to turn on him and the US team.

Agreed, it takes the gloss off a great all round performance by the European team, especially mano et mano in the singles, traditionally where the Americans have always proved strongest.

I think the Yank press are more in a beef about stuff like Mickelson ranked No2 in the World getting turned over 3&2 by someone 117 rankings below him + the fact they only won 2 singles matches despite having 'the strongest' team on paper,

They obviously haven't heard of the FA Cup !

totally over the moon for the european team, esp Sam Torrance who really made his team believe they could win it.

Only one downside though

Why the hell does sky have exclusive rights to it , the ryder cup should be like the fa cup and the other one like the grand national ,many none golfer watch this event and would probaly have drawn huge figures if it had been on terristal tv
But guess it's better that the beeb wasted cash on sh*te like Sarah Cox and that awful sitcom ""My family"

Okay rant over

I was there on Friday and the standard of golf was unbelievable but I hope thats the last time it's ever played at the Belfry. A very average course with 3 great matchplay holes very poor viewing facilities and on each tee bloody great advertising boards all the way around so the spectators could see bugger all. The crowds were very fair and the bottle it took for Duval to hole his putt on 18, and the skill under pressure of Azingers bunker shot was something else..... and we won.

No offence of course, but golf is tedious. Watching golf on the telly is even worse.

They will be televising tiddlywinks soon. Highlights of today's play at the International Drying Paint tournament.

Having said that, it's always nice to beat the Yanks, whatever the occasion!

Found the whole thing remarkable - gripping stuff, horrific pressure on the shoulders of 24 people used to coping with their own nerves, having to deal with the expectations of 11 of their peers, 30,000 crowd and 400,000 telly audience (travesty it wasn't on the beeb).

What really struck me was Monty's ability to step up to the plate and play out of his skin. Contrast that to Wood's apparent complete inability to be one of the US team on the course. He might have been a real trooper behind the scenes, but on course he hardly even spoke to his partner on the first two days. I don't think I saw him once help his partner line up a put.... amazing...

Fantastic achievement from rank underdogs - bloody marvellous.....

You obviously watched it then

Gripping stuff, even one of my "but the superbikes are on the other side" friends didn't ask for it to be turned over

Not one of my posts actually mentions the fact that I dislike golf (or Chimaera drivers) - I don't understand it enough to dislike it. I just thought it would be fair game..
I quite enjoyed the tension and skill (but i'll leave it 'till next time...)
But I don't mind the odd dig - but golf is tedious, christ on a bike, type something more constructive.

My brother watches a lot of golf and he says that Tiger is well known at being crap at team events, but individually he is awesome. I think by putting him last in the singles was the best thing that could have happen for Europe. It did not allow Tiger to get into the game because he was probably looking at the score board thinking that it was all over so why should he try so hard. If he had been sent out first I suspect we would have seen a different player - although he would have still been hard pressed to keep up with Monty!
