PHer's frequently ridicule the chavs for making alterations to the bodywork of their cars, putting on 'Bling' wheels and bolting on huge diameter 'zorsts' to make them sound louder.

However, there's hardly a week goes by without without a thread on either the Chimaera forum or the General TVR forum where someone wants advice on how to make their car sound louder or fit bigger wheels or modify the bodywork in some radical way.

Don't believe me? Try a search?

For instance, one of the favourite and most wtitten about mods is to fit a 'Sports exhaust'

One would have thought that this would be something carefully crafted by skilled engineers. Something developed using complex gas flow equations and dynamometers and calculated to improve the performance of the engine. The best of these designs , would be calculated to eek out every last available bhp and ft/lb of torque from the engine.

But no. It's more often just a crude ripping out of the exhaust innards to make it sound louder. Some of those involved even brag that one of the reasons they want this mod is to annoy their neighbours!

Now if that isn't the epitome of all that is chav, I don't know what is.

A Chav is someone who dresses in sports gear, nothing to do with modding cars.....I think you're confusing yourself...

IMHO there is a difference between 'enhancing' a lovely sports car with an alloy dash/sports exhaust/chipped ecu and gluing bits of badly painted plastic to a knackered 1.3 litre hatchback. The only bodywork mods I consider tolerable to a TVR are the functional - BossCerbera's or the twin turbo Griff for example; or the subtle - e.g the alternative grill available for the Tuscan.

I never modded my Griff, but if I had another I would probably go the zorst/dash/seats/suspension/Mark Adams route.

A modded TVR still has incredible style in most cases (Carisma Cerbera a notable exception). A £500 1.2 litre Corsa with a huge bodykit does not.

In a similar vein, are we likely to see Chavs with £10k to spend walking past that Scooby/3 series/etc in favour of an early Chimaera or Griff?

Probably not.

They are enthusiasts' cars, and always will be.

imo the only difference is the amount of money you've got. Good ol chav wants a car that is personalised to his/her tastes be it a corsa or whatever they can afford, and so do you!!

I have to admit the TVR marque tends to attract a more "blue collar" type of car enthusiast ; there`s very little in the way of urbane sophistication about most TVR owners and , as I understand it , many of them have problems in attracting the ladies .

I agree money can't buy taste. The Griff with Tuscan front end is a real turn-off for me. I wouldn't whack 18's on a Griff either. In fact, whilst I might go for 16" Estorils all round, I'm not keen on aftermarket alloys on TVRs in most cases.

Personalisation and TVR go hand in hand from the factory onwards - perhaps more so than most other marques.

Throwing plastic at a Saxo and making performance mods to a TVR are not the same thing. Most TVR upgrades are not significant bodywork changes, are they? When was the last time you saw a spoiler or bodykit on one? I can only think of a purple Cerbie that had a silly spoiler.

As for lots of cash and no taste, one of the worst things I ever saw was a brand new SL65 (this was a few years back) with a gold 'Wing'd Horse of Chavtat' bolted to the center of the bonnet. If only cameraphones had been around then...

I've been saying it for years STC, kids with Saxo's aren't any different to (of the top of my head) Corin Denton with his Chim500, or that bloke with them blinging great big wheels on his Chimaera in a recent thread.

As for lumping plastic at a Saxo- how can grafting a Tuscan front end on a Griff be any different???

Care to pop over to the P&P ? It's my round.

I've always said the same. There is no difference! Only the size of the wallet. Just because you have the wallet to buy a TVR it doesn't automatically demonstrate good taste. Otherwise, that is an admission that taste can be bought which, as Michael Jackson's Neverland has proven, is not the case.

And everybody is confusing Chavs with Laxxers - they are the car modifiers.

This could perhaps be considered by some as grey area and there are crossovers, but would a Laxxer modify his car with his main intention being that of annoying his neighbours?

Surely that's Chav innit?

IMO, chavness and PHism are seperated (and even then with a very blurred line) only by intent.

Car inthusiasts such as PHers generally modify their cars out of a desire to improve the performance of the car and to increase their enjoyment of it.

A chav will modify their car for one main reason, the desire for attention. This can take the form of (relatively) subtle modifications or full on horrific bastardisations of innocent automobiles. As long as they get noticed then they dont see a problem even if the resulting mess makes more PH minded people hurl.

The same often extends to the driving habits of the two groups. PHers will normally drive fast but only where the situations allow it to be carried out in safety. The chavs will drive as fast as possible as often as possible as it gets attention (even if it is negative)

Remember though, just as not all people who modify their cars are chavs, not all chavs modify cars. Being a chav is much more pervasive and imo far worse than modifying a car, wearing sports gear or being a rebelious teenager. It is the possession of an attitude that basically says you, I will do what I want, when I want and to hell with your possessions, your family and even your life. It is the lack of respect for the rest of decent society.

Its a sweeping generalisation that wont apply to everyone and every situation but in my experiance its generally the rule

So, that about covers making yor exhaust louder for no performance gain and grafting tuscan front ends and cerbie lights onto Chims and Griffs

But realistically, a Tuscan/Griff/Cerb hybrid isnt going to get a different reaction from 99% of the general population over a standard Tuscan, Griff or Cerb. If it makes the owner happier with the car then fair play.

Yes making your exhaust louder is something some chavs do but doing so, even for the intention of annoying the neighbours doesnt make you a chav.

Its all about attitude not visable results.

Agree totally, but it's not just the TVR brigade. A lot of the Ferrari boys have Tubis etc, and there are a number of threads on speccing the colour of the brake calipers on new cars. There's also the whole issue of reflex/cascade paint jobs.

Car modding is car modding, regardless of what you start with.

WTF?

I'm assuming he means that the Tuscan started out life as an updated Griff.
