Speed Camera's hiding

:smokin:Morning fella's.I have a question regarding mobile speed camera's.Traveling back along an 'A' road from a classic car show, my speed was about 55mph in a line of traffic I noticed a mobile speed camera hidden on an embankment behind bushes with it's doors closed but facing on coming traffic with a blacked out window with I assume the lazer and camera operating through the tinted glass.
1.Is it legal for the van to be hidden/obscured?
2.Is it legal to opperate the lazer and photographic equipment from behind any form of glass?
If this topic has been covered recently my apologies.This van was located on the Dawlish to Exeter road directly below the M5 flyover.Cheers.

My understanding is the guidelines say it should be visible and a laser instructions say it definitely not be operated through glass (even though they still seem to work 100% OK).
Guidelines are just that though, and the offence is speeding - not being caught by a visible camera whilst speeding.
Hopefully the camera van operator was just hiding reading a paper....... I mean, they never do anything sneaky or underhand do they ......

I don't think what you saw was a speed camera, but an ANPR van, although they are both employed by the 'safety' (yeah, right!) partnership . These use a camera to record registration numbers and match them to the DVLA database to check for road tax violations and against 'wanted' vehicles.
We often get them around here (Dorset), and my Snooper has never picked up a signal from either laser of radar. In fact, whenever I see one parked up, I go home to get the bike out and make a point of approaching them at 100+ mph speeds (no front number plate!!

My take on this....
1. They would argue they weren't hidden because you saw them. Also, they always park around blind bends,etc don't they? If they parked in clear view they'd not be able to phot any of us breaking the law would they?
2. How do you know they were actually using radar/laser? They might have been just setting up/packing up. More likely it was the ANPR looking for untaxed classics being driven away from Powderham - makes you laugh doesn't it, they are largely tax exempt anyway!
Anyway, with the amount of traffic on that road yesterday, you were lucky to get to 55mph
