Just a Thought...Speed

I was pootling around devon yesterday and spotted something very interesting... Nearing Newton Abbot- coming from Dartmouth, i spotted the usual speed camera signs but then i noticed in the distance some bright red numbers, when i got closer i realised this was actually one of those solar powered speed warning signs, except this one actually showed your current speed... Ive never seen one of these and wondered how this would improve safety as some people would see how fast they could go through it for fun, i know i might be tempted if there was no traffic around :boxedin:
Has anyone else seen these? The only down-side i can see is that there is only space on the display for 2 digits, thus 99mph is the max speed measured.

Lets hope the bloke that makes em is a PHer and puts aface on when the limit is exceeded

We live in hope, what is more likely is that the
comes up when it is a member of the local plod who has inadvertantly wandered over the speed limit, or was merely testing the capabilities of his vehicle. I heard the new versions of those also included built in speed cameras.... eek
Aparantly as you drive past after showing your speed it flashes up a two fingered 'V' sign and emmits the ASDA cash in back pocket 'bottom slapping' sound.
May be just an urban legend that one though...
I passed one of these just after one of my favourite corners when I had my Integrale, so

and 29. Useful calibration device!There's another variation which just flashes you a sign saying 'Slow Down' if it thinks you're going too fast. There's one on the A25, near Redhill if I remember. Trouble is the 
thing says Slow Down if you drive past it at 40mph - this on a road with a 40mph limit and where 40mph is perfectly reasonable. And that's 40mph by my speedo, which probably means 37mph actual.

Apparently people take more notice to signs that inform you rather than boxes that punish you.
The speed signs around here are limited to 46mph in the 30 zones. I think they do this to stop people like me trying them out at 2am. They also do it because I'm sure at higher speeds they are unreliable. One got me doing 96! (over a speed hump in a high street!) I was doing nothing like 96.

They are limited to 50mph to discourage "tests"
My local counciller made a great opportunity to put herself on the front page of the paper for putting one near 2 schools.
one week later it stopped working. thats £20,000 down the drain.
They got it working again occassionally, and it effects drivers to slow down - sorry, brake for no reason.
also its innaccurate, same speed every time on my speedo - different reading.
Ive yet to get a reply to my letter stating the new 30mph limit is rediculous and should be variable depending on when the lollypop ladies switch on the yellow beacons.
The schools are only a danger area 8-9:30am, 12-2pm 3-4:30pm, 40 weeks of the year.
- in total thats just 7% of the actual time in a year it NEEDS to be a 30 or less.
If the lolly ladies aren't there, use the money to make LED variable speed limit signs instead!!!!!!! grrr.

They certainly seem to work better than cameras which just p1ss people off.
Its an electronic version of a police me telling you that you are being silly and must drive more carefully as compared to one who is offensive and fines you. Which one are you ultimately going to agree with and listen to?

If it's the one I passed today - same stretch of road - there is a 20 limit in the village. If you can get round the bend at the bottom of the hill at more than 99, you're a better man than me gunga!!!
Personally I think they are brilliant idea, designed to make people think and they seem to work.
that you need to ease off a littleThey were trying out one of these round my way a couple of weeks ago, the scamera partnership were there at the time playing with it. At the time i was following a numpty up the road which was a 30 limit, as the sign wasnt setup properly it kept giving a red warning that you were speeding even though the speed showing was 29 mph, this caused said numpty infront to slow down, and slow down, a n d s l o w d o w n further until it read 10 mph and still flashing red

£20,000 for a bit of metal and a few hundred LED's... christ on a bike they need to get another manufacturer. There are lots of the "SLOW DOWN" signs in Bristol now - suppose thats where some of my inflated Council Tax is going

Transport Research Laboratory found they're thee times more effective than cameras for reducing speeds.
Which begs the question why aren't speed cameras being replaced by these devices as a matter of urgency.....?
