An idea that has come in to pressure the big oil companies and producers to reduce the price of petrol and diesel back to reasonable levels. This Could Work Seems like a good idea to be repeated.... See what you think and pass it on if you agree with it We are hitting 95p a litre in some areas now, soon we will be faced with paying £1 a ltr. Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea: This seems to have more effect than the "don't buy on a certain day" campaign that we tried last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read it and join in! Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP. If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to reach millions of people!! I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one leveL further, you guessed it... .. THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!! Again, all You have to do is sendthis to 10 people. That's all (and not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all
300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you!
Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR
PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE RANGE
It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Asda, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons Jet etc. i.e. boycott BP and Esso.

Very good point. Maybe someone on here could find out who supplies the supermarket chains and then we could give this idea a go, you never know it may work.

It HAS got a LOT to do with the UK government.
Why is it that we pay the most for petrol and diesel here in UK? - - It's because we suffer the highest percentage of taxation!! (Don't get me going on what the tax pays for...freeloaders on our social security)

In France in July branded unleaded was 1.30 euros a litre, not so different from here.
Is the tax fixed at 71% or is it so many pence per litre?
That is a good idea except:
The price of oil is set globally by OPEC, which affects all the oil companies.
The oil companies have to refine the oil ship it, transport it, run petrol stations, pay staff. Their profit margins are actually very small, they just sell a lot to make money. If they took a 50% cut in their profits, it may only make 1p difference per litre.
Secondly about 60p out of the cost of petrol in the pump is in tax. Obviously the government doesnt have to refine tax, ship it, or transport it.
If you want to make petrol cheaper, ask the government to reduce the tax. A 50% cut in profit there would be 30p.

As I keep saying on all of the other threads - the oil companies make a pitance on the retail of petrol. In reality they make between 2-5p per litre, of which profit is tiny.

In general agree that the problem is tax and not oil company profit, however the government is now very closely tied to big corporations, therefore they are more likely to listen to complaints of BP etc than desperately crippled drivers.
However as Gone_Again points out would an overnight halt of petrol sales for BP and Esso actually bother them that much? and where do you think Shell forecourts would get there petrol from once their demand increased by 66% ? i doubt there own facilities could cope with such an increase overnight. They would buy from BP and Esso.

Price of oil is set by the markets, OPEC only decide on how much oil opec members produce, andthis cant vary that much and there almost at capacity anyhow.
Current problem is the US is on holiday and burns more fuel coupled with continuing midle east troubles and China growing like mad.
Days of cheap petrol, .gov taxes or not are gone I guess.

I'm sure that's true, and yet BP once again this year made the biggest profit of any british company in history. So clearly the pitance they are making isn't hurting their shareholders too much!
Oil companies make a sheadload of refining thw stuff, selling it to punters in 1 liter lumps isnt where the profit is thats wher the tax is.
Esso make petrol for 5p a liter sell to station for 30p a liter making 25p a liter there somehwat tax free compared to the £1 a liter the esso petrol station would sell it for.
One independant garage said they make more cash of a chocky bar than they do on £5 of fuel and if the punter pays by card it actualy cost them money to sell the petrol (card charges).

About 75% of whatever you pay for fuel is tax. So at 90p/litre, 67.5p of that is tax - which means the filling station is only getting 22.5p/litre. Your figures are very wrong.
