RANT the news on BBC Scotland
Discussion
RIGHT Be warned RANT coming.
I've just been watching the crappy local news here in Strathclyde and we've just had one of these speed scameras are good and all motorists are evil propaganda films shoved down our throats.
And I'm F
ing mad.
There was no independant reporting what so ever. It was entirely the police propaganda line swallowed hook line and sinker. I mean the film was so blatantley one sided its not true.
First up they claim that cameras cut crashes and injuries by 64% or some such crap. Now first up, like the rest of Britain I'm damn sure that overall injuries and fatalities are actually going up. There was a thread in the speeding & plod section a few days ago that showed that fatalities were going UP in countries with gatsos but DOWN in countries where they just didn't give a damn.
Secondly I saw an advert on the back of a bus recently claiming that accidents and injuries were down 90% so they can't even sing from the same propaganda sheet. Idiots.
So how did they come up with their nice made up figuress then. Yup, you've guessed it they were (probably) only quoting accident rates on the stretches of road that the speed cameras are installed in. Fit a speed camera to a site that there has been an accident last year and this year no accident then there you go a 100% reduction to start with.
Now I have no problems with cameras in accident blackspots and no problem with statistics. But they were definently suggesting here that there had been an overall reduction in accidents/injuries by 60% despite the fact that this is HIGHLY unlikely. (although I don't know for sure but I find it hard to belive that a few gray boxes could achieve this in only two years)
The report deliberatly set out to hoodwink the masses.
And of course you had all your bloody interviews with every man and his dog about why the public "supported" cameras. Not one drivers got interviewed. Not only that but they managed to dreg up a bunch of interviewees who didn't look as if they could even drive. Right bunch of monkeys.
Then they go onto say that as the whole thing has been such a resounding success that we'll be getting more speed cameras. Well whoop de bloody do. Can't F
ing wait.
In case you didn't know Strathclyde is part of the hypethocation scheme whereby they get to claim back cash to run the cameras. Which means more cameras have more film more of the time.
And of course you had the tame bloke from the AA mumbling something about wanting more patrol cars (fair point) but how cameras helped. Ho Hum if this is the motorists defense then we're all F**ked.
I fear that Strathclyde is rapidly heading the way of the english. All this NIMBYism and speed cameras. Next thing you know there will be speed bumps everywhere.
At least they are still calling the damn cameras speed cameras. Your lot are calling them safety cameras
what a load of bolloks.
We're doooooomed I tell you.
Ah well good thing I was planning to emigrate soon anyway.

Are you in the ABD? If you are, ask them if they were given the oppportunity to participate..
If they didn't appear, maybe they couldn't get anyone up there, but they do phone interviews every day...
Or more likely, HaggisBBC failed to summon them.
Join the ABD and collar your local rep about it..
Sounds like it is just another example of what is typical small mindedness from some of the BBC news regional outposts.

Carzee, do you ever log off?????
To answer your question I'm not a member of the ABD (my crappy exuses are that I'm a flat broke student)
I suppose I should join but I can't help but feel we've already lost this one. I'd rather go ballistic and simply vandelise the things out of existence. I feel direct action is the best form. After all its clear that they simply aren't going to listen to anyone. The cotton wool mommy knows best brigade have won. SO ITS TIME FOR WAR.......

Don't want to go on at great length about this, but it's shocking that in the cases I've seen, they have not EVER taken account of the fact that people change their route when reduced speed limits are imposed.
This of course means less people on the road with the shiny new camera, so a total failure to count increased accidents on the alternative route.
The second very dodgy technique is to find an area which had an anomolously high accident rate one year (again, of yuo know statistics, you'll know that thhongs like accidents are not evenly spread, but are lumpy, even if every place and every time are equally as risky as each other), then quote the "reduction" caused by the camera, even if the drop is only back to the previous average from before the dodgy year happened.
This is plain and simply wrong, and anyone who uses these stats should hang their head in shame.

Yea, I saw this to (ITV at Lunchtime)...
Much the same thoughts -very not impressed, but, at the end of the report they were talking about a web site which listed all the speed cameras in Scotland, and there position -www.camerascutcrashes.com This is now getting printed and will live in the car for when I drive any roads i do not use regularly..
Unfortunatly, despite what the report said, this web site only covers some regions. -anyone know of one for the east of Scotland as it would be far more usefull to me...
Pete.

I've just read the freebie newspaper the Metro this morning which had a small story on this. Turns out I was right accidents are only down 60% in the immediate vicinity of speed cameras. Turns out that crashes are down overall by 17%. But thats only for in the city of Glasgow mind you. The rural areas may still be sustaining their usual high casualties.
Bloody statistics and propaganda.
Think I'll have to get me a print out of all those Strathclyde scamera locations.

Andy, Don't even get me started! I was sooooooooo pissed off last night I stood up, walked to my car (leaving the house via the approriate exit) and had a good blast! Bunch of propaganda touting FUCKWITS!
One thing you did forget to mention was that FUCKING website, www.camerascutcrashes.com!
I've had it shoved down my throat all
day by the radio, CLYDE BLOODY 2 (the works van radio is busted and thats the station it's permanatly on
) and West ****ing FM. There all as bad as each other
"here at Strathclyde police, we're proud that our speed camera's have cut crashes by 68%. To see how visit www.I'm-an-anal-bastard.com" Wankers.
And not forgetting the other one.
Stupid ****ing Woman - If I was to tell you that last year there were over 500 fatal crashes in strathclyde, what would be you reaction.
Some Bloke - Oh thats terrible, but you have to feel for the driver as much as the victim.
SFW - and if I told you that 150 of those were over the limit.
SB - No excuses, no need for it yada yada yada
SFW - When I said the Limit, I meant the SPEED Limit.
SB - The sp...speed limit.
SFW - When you over the limit, your OVER the limit
OH
OFF!
Does my ****ing nut in!

I feel better now, but next time that comes on the telly, I might get off my lazy arse and do something!
