Should probably post in general gassing but I'd like to ask as many PH bods as possible.

Drove my car over a 2ft long x 1ft wide x 6inch deep hole in the middle of a 40 limit suburban road on the way home tonight.

Went home, got my camera and photographed it.

Will go back tomorrow and photo it in daylight.

Now - I think that it's totally unacceptable that such a hole should exist on a suburban road. It's clearly highly dangerous. I nearly shat myself when I went over it at 35 as the car banged violently and I thought I'd run into another car.

I intend to get the car inspected at my local dealer to check the suspension and geometry. I don't intend to pay for this as I am not to blame here.

What's the best course of action - send the bill straight to the Council Highways Maintenance department or pay and send the Council a small claims court summons for monies owed to me?

I believe a lot of councils now have claim departments specifically for bad roads, so i'd contact them first.

Cheers,
Rob.

OK so I've found this claim form on the Council website www.leeds.gov.uk/files/2005/week47/inter__8bc49d5a-b254-42f3-84ad-20051ee45dc1_40935abf-09b6-4284-bad4-879c6ee59197.pdf

Call me old fashioned but I don't like the 'sign your life away' bits which are compulsary and force me to allow any old slapper in the council to obtain details of my earnings from my employer as well as my medical records.

Think we'll be going the small claims court route.

Welcome to Blair's Britain.

As far as I know, the council look after the wee roads, and larger companies look after the trunk roads.

Up here, it's BEAR Scotland who look after the large roads.

Just make sure you're looking for compensation from the right people...

HA...you ought to try driving through Sheffield.

When you photograph the hole, put a bottle or something in it to define the scale.

Took a metal tape measure with me when I went back to photograph it.

I'll post the pics if someone has a host site available.

Well you've not lost earnings so you don't need to fill that bit out. In the same way you don't need the bit about the Injury report because you weren't injured.

Best of luck fella.

Every case of this I have ever heard of (and I have no first hand experience) has been a grim fight.

Hope it works out.
