Hey people,
I was wondering how many members PH has and it occured to me that we could all `chip` in and build a car for using at trackdays/racing and would be a good project for all of us PH`ers. There is a s***load of experience and ability out there and I for one would not mind helping to produce a monster...If for example we have 10 000 members and only half that want to contribute £1, ( I think we could all afford that! ) That would give the budget £5k which should easily be enough to get an 80`s/90`s rocket and modify it or something a little different...
We would have lots of fun/battles deciding which car, engine, class of racing, paintjob etc and do raffles to drive it at events. Even if nobody cares for a `hands on approach` due to lack of time/money etc a garage could be used to do the manual labour. We needn`t be in a hurry and could do collections every month which would net another £5k for the budget. We could end up with something to be proud of...
I for one am registering my support of such a project...
We must first pool support,
Decide on vehicle,
Decide on mods,
Race it!!
...and not let it decend into arguments that stop the project from ever happening..
It would be great as we could all check up on it through a `project PH` section with photos/videos.
LETS DO IT!!!

So were would this car be kept what if it got stolen what if it was smashed up at an event ???
its a good idea but there is to many "what ifs" to make it viable.

Seems like you're looking for 9,990 people who want to contribute to a car they'll never drive, and most will never even see in the flesh?

It might be more realistic for PistonHeads to adopt a local race team. What PH brings to the deal is ready access to a lot of interested people, and a shop that could probably be used to collect sponsorship. What would PH get back in return, to justify Ted putting time and effort into this?

Awa wi the nae sayers, dude. I'm up for that, possibly not if the car's in Renfrewshire!! The camaro could be the way ahead, mind.

Perhaps for this type of class action, Ted could help out with a density map of where PHers are, geographically, to help spot this vehicle. For a viable project, though, numbers would need limiting, and that opens up the possibility of many cars, each with a fixed budget, and fixed number of investors (see where this is going?) limiting possible losses, fallings out, feelings of non-involvement. So what you have are, say, a dozen cars, a dozen 'teams', and a tidy little race series made up of the most uber-mental cars in the country.

Surely someone is doing this already? If not, back off, Bernie, the idea's mine.

Thoughts.........?

This is a very good idea but it has it's flaws...

My idea would be to buy a cheap V8 and Drag race it...The PH'ders who had a hand in buying the car (will be many by the sounds fo it) could all meet up a Santa Pod and all have a go in the car up the strip on a run what you brung Day (As well as in their own car that got them to Santa Pod)

Otherwise instead of it being a national thing do it by the regions in the UK that are specified on the PH Forum. eg Midlands, South East,North. The PH'ders in the regions Secified on the Forum could then buy a car between them and maybe do the same thing.

The region thing would mean there are (hopefully)not 10,000 people all trying to drive one car---Hell some might not even see it even if it was their idea to buy that type of car.

This is a good idea but will be very difficult to work out

We havent even got to where the car would be stored and what would happen if it was stolen...

(Lets not even think about a PH regional League)

It would be great fun if it could work (meet many others PH'ders in the flesh) but the path to glory is littered with many potholes(like the A34)

Let see if it will happen

All very well and good getting money to build a car, but who would pay for the maintanence...
A slightly flawed plan I feel, but it would be pretty cool.

Without wishing to put a downer on this most people who are able to do the work required already do it and while I can only speak for myself I can't see anyone putting the weeks of work required for a project like this for hundred of people to drive the car with a hire car attitude. In theory it's a nice idea but in practice it's a very effective way for a lot of people to fall out.

Sorry,

Mark

Remember the cost to get involved would intially be £1. I personally would not mind never driving the as I lose a quid every time I sit on the bloody sofa...If a raffle is done it`s fair and there can be no poor losers. Perhaps nobody does have the time or facilities to build it...fine no problem. Garage labour will slow the project down but we don`t need to rush it. As long as the car isn`t written off in a smash, it can be sold for more than it was originally cost to buy which would keep the `beancounters` happy. We are many and should be able to knock together a crackin car for next to nothing. For me personally I need not ever see the car in the flesh, as long as there is plenty of pics and vids of it in action....I would be very dissapointed if we could not work this out between us...We could print the name of all the contributers/team all over the car as part of the paintjob...
Hey, I would even donate one of my Rover SD1`s to get us started. It is already tucked away in a lockup which solves any storage hassles...
Anyway let`s just pool support first.....I`d rather see a pistonhead V8 ripping up tarmac than give my quid to Camalot, we can decide on vehicles when we get an idea how many £1`s/Shareholders the project attracts...

Count me in for starters!!

That Camaro is gorgeous!

Hmmm, 10,000 people? Not going to get much use of the car!

It would never get built because it would turn into handbags at 5 paces in under a minute.

It doesn`t matter at this stage whether it will work or not all that`s needed at this stage is to say if you would be willing to pledge a quid for such a project. There must be a better way of finding out how many PH `ers would join than each reply saying there willing to do it? Any ideas?.. The negative thinkers must need the £1..
I am skint and still pledge my quid...
Yours faithfully
Francis.

i think it would be better to have 50 people pledging £100 if it was sure to get at least 1 reasonable drive in it

both good ideas..!!Keep`em coming!
1000 members at £10 = £10 000..
500 members at £10 = £5 000...

500 seems a realistic target..!
Still, it defeats the `nothing to lose` aspect of £1 per member..
More support please..
2500 members at £2 ...?
It`s early days....

the car could be bought and all those who contributed could compete in regional go karting qualifiers to see who got to have first go and so on

Excellent idea...this would weed out those of questionable ability behind the wheel!..
Although is hardly fair to members who A: are overweight..
B: are useless...
C: are as light as a feather..
Crucial to progress is an estimate of numbers of shareholders...

how much is a trackday? how often do they happen? where?

in theory if there was a trackday every week and you were allowed to share a car between 10 people for an afternoon. not including tyres, fuel, repairs and transport.

how much would you pay for that? £40 for example

then you could have 10x40x52= £20k

completely hypothetical of course - but that would be the best way of doing it,in that ilk balancing cost and cartime.

but at the end of the year it its not been crashed then you have a car.

Buy a brand new Rx8 - only use it for a weekly trakday, get repairs done under warranty, end of the year sell it, a low milage car (assuming no crashes) then get most of the money back.
