Had a Corrado VR6 for several years. Great engine and excellent handling for FWD. Still miss it now. Fuel consumption should be better than the Impreza at approx 28 mpg.

Pros and cons.

Impreza:
Pros - 4WD, very fast, practicality should you need it (5 door estate available, for example)
Cons - drinks like an alcoholic falling off the wagon, has an image of sad 30's bachelor still living with parents and wearing 555 Rally jacket. Or Chav. Very nickable. My dad drives one.

Corrado:
Pros - high 30's mpg if driven carefully, good performance, one of the best FWD cars around, good image still.
Cons - still FWD though. They're getting on a bit now (even the youngest ones are 9 years old).

Edit: I bet nobody expected me to be that objective.

Corrado.

Them old Impreza's are quite one dimensional. A friend once had one and said that it was quick like, but that was about it.
He much preferred and revelled in the ownership of his Jordan Civic, which says alot I think.

Corrado is far more classy too. It's never had that image problem either if that matters to you!

Sweet engine too...

1 dimensional... In what way? Quick, big boot, 4 doors, planty of room, handles very well.

I think he's referring to the fact that the original Impreza Turbo was a pretty anonymous-looking saloon with a sub-standard interior that had really only one thing going for it - it was an absolute rocket. My brother-in-law was overtaken by one and, not knowing what it was, phoned me and asked me if Ford had just launched an uber-Mondeo or something (the first generation Mondeo and the original Impreza did have a similar front).

Nobody is denying that the Impreza is a performance bargain, it's just that particular model of Impreza did have a pretty bargain interior to go with it. It took Subaru several iterations to improve that.

However, as with all of these type of threads, the real answer is to drive both and buy the one you like.

I found space in the Corrado to be an issue for me but the best advice is given above get a poke around in both and see which you prefer.

I dont think either will disapoint.

About sums it up. Really quite different cars, best try out both. Perceived image seems to be a potential problem for with Subaru ownership these days, but stuff 'em.
Corrado might have the edge on class, but you might have trouble finding an unmolested one as they must be getting on in years by now.

Yes, it has performance, and if you don't look past that, it's a fine car indeed. A seriously capable car that is often overlooked.

However, the occasion of driving and detailing, interior ambience etc, are miles off the Corrado, in my opinion anyway!

Know someone who has just got a Corrado VR6, stunning car for the age! Could make it today and get away with it!

I own a late 99 Impreza wagon but have never driven a VR6 Corrado, I would say they are different animals, I bought my Impreza because I needed a bit more practicality and the 4wd appealed as I am moving to the countryside soon...I can tell you one thing, it is a fast car; but then again so is the Corrado. I love the 4wd, yesterday it was tipping it down and the Impreza was fantastic, foot to the floor, no wheelspin, no torquesteer etc, but the interior is basically awful, nice seats, decent steering wheel but the rest; oh dear! Although I will say it all works and does have air con. And the engine sounds great.

If you don't need the practicality the Corrado has a lot to offer, great engine, great handling, good looking etc

The choice is yours.

Yeah good point, in the wet the Corrado will have trouble using it's performance, bit 6 pot up front! Wheras the Impreza will likely just cope like it does in the dry, with a tad more wiggle.

With any car you really need to test drive as much as you can, so if you haven't, do!

Owned both. While the WRX is quicker point to point (esp in the wet), the VR6 is more fun to drive and IMHO has the best FWD handling of almost any car then or since.
If I had to get either one today it would be a VR6 Storm (run out model with extra kit on it) An absolute future (if not now) classic.

again that is personal preference, IMO they both sound great in different ways, I would say the Impreza with standard exhaust is a little muted...
