I hate diesels

The reason?

Well I changed a turbo for a mate at work on his '03 mondeo which had blown an oil seal and was pumping engine oil directly into the turbo ( nice), about 5 hours later ( its fairly involved as its built into the exhaust manifold) I went to fire it up again and go it started no probs but a bit smokey.

OK I thought, its just burning off what was there, after about 5 mins of idling the smoking had dissapated a bit and I thought to blip the throttle a bit to see if it was boosting up OK, at this point the ruddy thing charges off the end of the rev counter and up to about what sounded like 9 grand!
I had the Keys in my hand and its sat there screaming its little diesel nuts off!

When it eventually stopped about 30 secs later I went over it and tentativly tried to restart which it did but now has a large top-end rattle.

I'm prety sure that it must have been running off the old oil that would have been pumped into the intercooler / intake will find out today as I take it apart...

I thought diesels had governors fitted BECAUSE the nature of the fuel leads to exactly what happened - didn't disconnect the governor didyou?

I say the above without forethought or any expertise whatsoever!

If its got fuel (old engine oil in this case) and air it'll run, like I said I had the keys in my hand and it was sitting there screaming away......

Thats got to be the same effect as running out of diesel, where it then revs like a bugger off the oil until you stall it. The residue oil left milling around the turbo and intake gets burnt off until it seizes, I suppose you're lucky it hasn't seized.
(This harks back to landrover days) The best thing to do about the top end noise is to turn the radio up until you can't hear it.

Afraid the only thing you can do with a diesel thats run away like that is starve it of oxygen.....

wait till you have a 72 litre version do that.......and then have con rods and crank exit the crankcase......

Horrible.. I had that happen to a 2 stroke 250 - back in my yoof..

Fitted some different bars and the throttle cable route was wrong..

Scary at 7am in the morning .. full throttle.. and loads of noise

If you've got a co2 fire extinguisher handy, I believe that emptying the contents up the air intake will stop the engine.

That happened to a massive tractor thing on ScrapHeap Challenge once. It was going crazy. Spat oil out everywhere.

As long as a piston is not about to make an exit from the block as you are trying to stop it !

Isn't the normal thing to do just shove it into 5th and let it try to 'pull away' thus stalling?

Holy feck . . . 9k for a diesel: that's a record isn't it I love mine btw . . . pulls without effort and is faster than an equivalent petrol 2.0 . . . You only notice looking at the speedo btw.

Matt - perhaps you should stop being such a good sport and make him take it to a garage in future..

and next time you see him just casually mention - oh by the way did you notice your top end rattle - it terrible.. bloody diesels
