In the 80s and early 90s white was very popular on Porsches, BMWs and various other performance cars. Come the mid-90s, white had become extremely unpopular and second-hand cars in white traded at a big discount to metallics etc.

I've seen a lot of talk on other threads and forums that white is on its way back big-time.

Any truth in this?

Definately, has been in for the last year. Although i'm not sure the trend will return full-scale. Pharrell Williams has a white Ferrari IIRC, and he's the epitomy of cool at the moment. The new Golf GTi looks best in white too!

Cheers,
Rob.

I generally dislike white cars, but when I see white Porsche 944/911s from the 80's or early 90's I get tempted to change my mind. Some classics look ok in white as well. And a Honda Integra looks lovely in white

I've been saying this for ages - much to the amusement of my friends who think I'm mistaken. But look at the press cars that influential OEMs have been handing out recently to EVO magazine.

New Gold GTi - White
New M5 - White
Bugatti Veyron - White

When my company 3 series is up for change there's only one colour I going for (provided I get the sport model again with no chrome).

Exige 240Cup - White
Porsche Cayman - White

both of these look stunning, keeps the lines of the car smooth and shows off the edges, needs to be kept clean but so much better than boring silver.

most of the current hot hatches look quite cool in white. i've seen white Fiesta St's with the blue stripe, white Citroen C4 VTS's and my local Ford dealer had a white Focus ST demo car the other day (parked alongside an electric orange one) it seems to be a revival of the 80's again!

Top Gear did a feature on this in November iirc, the new cars that (to them) look coolest in white are- the ford GT, landrover discovery, mini cooper s, golf GTi and gallardo spyder if i remember correctly. Maybe someone could back me up/disprove me on this?

I think white will make a comeback. Part of the reason for its dissapearance was that you looked like a police car, but the police are staring to buy silver. So is White the new silver?

White is cool.

80's is cool at the moment so Miami Vice white Testarossa rocks.

Recently, I saw a white RR Phantom with a white Lambo Murky behind it, both with arabic plates waiting to board a ferry. They looked stunning.

White.... as much a pain in the ass to keep clean as black. Some cars can get away with it, I saw a new Micra today and it looked hideous.

Take a look at the geneva motorshow, lots of white cars there.

White has always been popular in the far east and hot countries like the middle east.

Obviously it reflects the heat in the hot environments and is a traditional colour or something.

White has also been a traditional motorsport colour.

Plus silver has become so common it is now the new boring colour that white became from overuse 15-20 years ago.

White's never been out..!!

But I think the turning point in perception coincided with the majority of the police forces changing to Silver for their new cars

Easier to sell on when they've finished with them.
