I'm going this week for the Historic F1, from Liverpool! So Shropshire is not too far!
Ask me next week and I'll tell you how long it took.

I've done London-Frejus (on the Cote D'Azur, approx. 5 miles from Monaco) in 17 hours (we took Dover-Calais ferry), doing all the driving myself but had wife for company. Easy to do if you take breaks. I got a bit tired after 12 hours, had half-hour nap, did the rest no probs. I wouldn't advise doing it solo by yourself in the car though.

I did London-Nice with an overnight at low (up to 110mph) speeds and it was a doddle. One hit with two drivers and a more liberal attitude to speed would be easy. It was a friend's car and he wouldn't let me push it, although it would have done close to twice that.

What the hell was it?
I'm driving down for the F1 GP, leaving from Bath next Wednesday, speed ferries across the channel and going to have a stop over. Just me driving as my girlfriend is to young to get insured on my car (she's 21 BTW so I'm not some kiddie fiddler!)I'm planning plenty of breaks.
My Dad is also driving down, he's leaving this weds for the Historic and then is staying for the F1 the following weekend.
It's going to be my first long drive in France so looking forward to some great roads and lack of traffic, although keep hearing nasty stories about the French BiB!!

Not much help but I left about Monaco (actually about 20 mins away) at 1.00am local and was at home the same day at 4.00pm having a beer in West Sussex!
The Journey down I was over two days, but I would now consider a single day journey if you don't have kids and you can. Be aware though, all the roads heading south are BUSY all the time!(mainly because there's only one main rouote down). However, all the roads heading north are busy, but OK. Even at 2, 3 or 4 in the morning the southern route seemed clogged with traffic.
however, 980 miles later on the way back having had a relaxed lunch in Calais and a wonderful drive home there I was. My wife won't drive any of my cars so it was a slog towards the end on the slow M25!
I'm also off to Le Mans next month which will be an easy drive by comparison.
(I'm also a Shrewsbury lad who moved south to make some money!)

Every beach east of Nice is pebbly. If you want sand you have to head west.
I drove down there with a mate about 5 yrs ago, just decided at the last miniute, and was one of the best weekends of my life. We left surrrey at about 4pm (bad idea M25 at that time of day 
particularly on a friday before a bank holiday) got to Reims about 1100pm found a hotel for the night then set of 0700am next morning and made Nice by about 4pm. You will also discover the lost art of lane discipline still exists not to mention motorways that arent a complete log jam of traffic at all times 
.
Do it you wont regret it.

I'm staying at my uncles in Monaco but there are some really nice villages between Nice and Monaco. Beaulieu Sur Mer and Villefranche Sur Mer are about 20 mins to the east of Monaco and offer great hotels and good resturants at a fraction of the Monaco prices plus you can catch the train from either and avoid parking nightmares in Monaco.
You have to drive the middle Corniche with jaw dropping views on the way in to Monaco and it passes through a magical medieval village called Eze.

Whats with all this "drive straight down as fast as you can" stuff?
There this huge, magical area called The Alps, it sits roughly between Shropshire and Monaco, albeit nearer the Monaco end.
Its a big area full of smooth, twisty and deserted roads, with fantastic scenery to boot.
If nothing else, do the Route Napolean south of Digne, its one of the worlds best roads.
Try to spend a couple of days traversing the Alps. It'll possibly be the best bit of your trip.

My thought exactly; what a great opportunity for a driving holiday! Having driven all the way from Perth to Bathurst (over 3000km each way, mostly desert & bush) just for the 1000km race, I would do it for sure (if I lived in England)

After last years historic gp, the circuit wasn't returned to 'normal', everything was left in place and the circuit seemed to be a one-way road. If thats the case this year, and if I was there in a car I'd certainly consider getting up at about 3.30 am and see about going for a PB!
I mean, when boasting about it in the pub, you're hardly likely to come across anyone with a better lap time, are you?
