YAY !

I bet there's a bit more to it than the article tells, I bet he was gobby with the Police or argumentative, so that instead of just being told to turn them off he got on their nerves so they gave him a fine.

And I'd bet good money it wasn't really foggy where he'd just come from ...

Isn't it weird how motoring offences are enforced with glittering efficiency (automated enforcement via cameras, traffic wardens on every street) and enforced with an iron fist. Yet other crimes which are more important (at least from my point of view, burglary etc) seem to go relatively uninvestigated and the penalties seem to be lighter (community service etc)...

I suspect it's just the perception I'm fed from the press but it does concern me...

Article says he had been warned before but in TV interview he claimed he didn't know there was a law against it. Hmmm

Fantastic, a sensible bit of vehicle policing - lets hope this gets massive publicity and all the fog light numpties think a little harder before they press that switch.

Yeah - he was jailed for not paying the fine as I understand it, it's just that fine happened to have come fromt he fog light incident.

Too bloody right. Especially as he'd been warned before. To summarise; he was a cocky git that thought they'd do nothing, again, and they called his bluff. I bet he never uses his fog lights again.

Me too. In the last few days on PH, I've seen threads on hijackers being granted asylum, a rapist/attempted murderer getting a light sentence, a looney being released early so he could kill someone, and 1000 illegal immigrants - many of them dangerous criminals - being let let loose due to some sort of 'clerical error'. It seems that the only open and shut cases these days, where justice wields her mighty sword like Zorro on ecstasy, are traffic offences. Everything else seems to be one great big liberal grey area.

Edit - I'm not suggesting the sentence was wrong in this instance, btw.

Stop calling me Shirley.

OK, yes he was jailed for non-payment of a fine, which is serious and makes the punishment in respect of the fog lights look out of proportion.

The good thing is that he was fined for the incorrect use of his 'look at me' lights.
I wrote to Autocar when they had a cover with two cars showing just fog and side lights in good visibility, saying it was setting a poor example and was illegal. Didn't publish letter, but good a response from the editor about 'getting good photographs' blah blah blah.

They didn't publish the one I wrote when Chris Harris gave numpty info about 'doing a handbrake turn' either.

Good idea that - well done! (no matter how many times I re-read that it sounds sarcastic but was said with sincerity!). Was it a personal letter or was it more a blanket response as if they'd had a similar letters before or was it a genuine one? Very good of him to reply nevertheless.

Twats with foglights on during the day or at night wen its not foggy...what is the bloody obsession with this. Usually its young drivers (im 18, but in my 1 and a half years of driving, have only had my fogs on once...it was actually foggy!) I see all sorts of pricks with theirs on..drives me nuts! Worst are youngish beemer drivers!

Mymate, she drives with her fogs on..i told her its not a good idea and was against the law when its not foggy etc. Her response was " everyone else does it ". when you get a dumb ass response like that you cant help but think it..why bother explainin and wasting your time! That was 6months ago...last week she got stopped...and guess what for...!

I dont drive with my fogs on, mainly becuase its pointless BUT TBH whats the problem? if they blind you then theres something wrong with your eyes as the only vehicles where they are at a height to bother is on certain 4x4's. 5 days in jail for refusing to pay a fine for that, sure he needs knocking down a peg or two but...

The law needs a little shuffle in its priorities.

Two things that annoy me most 'Middle Lane Morons' & 'Fog Light F**k Wits'. If they want folks to notice them - buy a special car. When I pass a car with their rear fog lights on I always flash mine JIC they aren't aware they have their's on. But most times this just seems to go over their head. (I'll get off me soap box now before I....)

Exactly how I feel. What is everyone's bloody obsession with this? Who really cares? If it's not blinding you, what is the big deal with someone having their fog lights on? What is the danger that this causes? I don't drive with my fog lamps on. I don't have TV aerials sticking off of my bootlid. No blinging chromed wheels or spinners either. I don't understand the chav culture. BUT, do I care enough that I want it banned and have the lot of them thrown in prison? NO.

I do understand that this fellow has been jailed for not paying his fine. But why fine someone for having their fog lights on? Can someone please explain the threat to society from this nefarious crime?

A total waste of time and resources for the prison system. It would have been far more appropriate to make him do some community service preferably related to road safety for the refusal to pay, and really you have to ask if it was really worth going that far anyway.

I don't know about anybody else but I would prefer prison to contain people who are a threat to society - murderers, rapists, armed robbers, burglars, fraudsters, perjurors and those who bribe to get an honour.

QUESTION TIME

Are they talking about FRONT or BACK fog lights, yes I know the rear ones are not called fog lights, but they are the ones which pi$$ me off more than the front ones, especially when you are behind someone with them on, and the visibility is for miles and miles.

Now thats worth a fine especially if he had been warned before.

Have a nice day

What is the single lamp on the back called? The one that glows brightly when you have your fog lamps on?

And why is it considered dangerous to have them on in no fog? Because of the diminished value/attention that might be given them in case of true fog, sort of like boy crying wolf scenario? Or is it something else?

I think the correct term is "High Intensity Rear Lights" or something like that.

The problem is when you are stuck behind someone at night with them on, its so bloody irritating, and cocks up your vision a bit to, thats why I considerate it dangerous, irritates drivers. I'l just have a google for the correct terminology.

Trouble is half the buggers a) dont know when should, or shouldnt have them on, and b) have absolutely no idea what the little glowing switch on the dashboard is. Front ones no prob, they drive past you, but to be stuck behind someone.........

Incidently, you said "Single", in the UK, some cars have just the one, others have two, depends on the make of vehicle.

Have a nice day

OK, had a google, they are called fog ligts

Rule 94: You MUST NOT

use any lights in a way which would dazzle or cause discomfort to other road users

use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves to avoid dazzling other road users

My bold, not theirs.

Have a nice day

I've also found that on cars where this no centre brake light, it can make it very difficult to see when a car is braking. Especially on the motorway during rain. Very very dangerous.

I couldn't care less if someone drives with their front fogs on but rear's can be dazzling and potentially dangerous.
