Afternoon All,

I've asked this in the Yesterday's heroes forum but its a bit quiet hence this post - this has been covered before but need a fresh set of eyes on it;

I'm contemplating purchasing a classic as an everyday car. Currently I have a 5 year old Range Rover that I use for a 15 mile roundtrip commute in West London traffic everyday and load lugging when neccesary, and I have a concours Mk1 Jensen Interceptor as a toy for the weekends.

The idea is to sell the RR and run a classic car through my company; it really needs to be pre-73 and current value probably upto 10k. Criteria is fairly loose - got to be ample room (I'm 6ft5) with a good reputation for reliability..

My thoughts so far are;

Volvo Amazon - Get a very nice one for 5-6k (solid as a rock and reliable)
Jaguar 420G - very nice one 10k ish. Even bigger than the RR! (lots of creature comforts)
Jag Mk2/S type.
Rover P5B..

Can anyone come up with any other ideas?

Fuel Economy wise; nothing will be worse than the Jensen and even my current diesel Range Rover I'm lucky to get 18mpg+ so as long as I can expect 20mpg + on a run I'll be happy.

Answers on a postcard....

Thanks all,

Steve.

Your criterior allows for anything from an Austin Maxi to a Rolls Royce.

No idea about mpg figures on these:

Alvis TD21 Saloon
Jaguar XJ6 S1
Truimph 2000
BMW 2800
Stacked headlight Mercedes saloon

All of these would make reasonable load luggers. But I would go for the Amazon.

Thanks for the replies so far; I was deliberatly vaque to get as many ideas as possible.

I've had a good think and only came up with the ones I listed.

Has to be;

Pre-1973
Large
Market value of 10-12k or less.
A bit of Luxury - no Austin Maxi/Ford Cortina's
Solid and reliable reputation

Cheers,

Steve

Has to be Pre-'73 for no road tax.

Also the Company car benefit in kind tax is based on a percentage of the original purchase price, a car that cost about 2k in the late 60's/early 70's would attract a BIK payment of about 200 quid a year...

Cheers,

Steve.

Bentley T1?

Personally I'd have a P5B or a Scimitar. Although that Jag looks pretty tasty

The boss at Jaymic sold one of these on e bay last year it was a complete rebuild with a blue printed engine and everything was top notch, unfortunately the colour was biege it was worth £25000 (so he said), it went for £10300 i think.

Even the single carb model was faster than a Cortina Lotus mark 2.

Surely this is a drop in the ocean saving compared to how much it'll cost you to run/maintain?

As you mention at the top - Jaguar Mk X. If it's good enough for the Krays, it's good enough for you! Always wanted one myself. Minters seem to go for around £16k, so you may have to look around a bit.

Alternativly a Daimler V12 Pillarless Coupe - although a minter will be above the £10k mark.

Non Jags could be anything:

Sunbeam Imp Sport/Stilletto (for oddball fun)
MGB GT
Marcos wotsit thingy with the wooden 'hull'
Citroen SM (A great accompanyment to your Jensen - although may not fit the reliability angle)
